HENRICO -- A Prince George County woman accused of felony child neglect in the deaths of her two young children was ordered held without bond this morning in Henrico Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.
Brittney Downing, 22, appeared by video from the Henrico Jail for her arraignment. Commonwealth's Attorney Shannon Taylor told the court that Downing was a flight risk and that the alleged neglect occurred while she was free on bond awaiting trial in Colonial Heights on a charge of obtaining money by false pretenses.
Taylor said the children, ages 3 months and 20 months, had been left in the mother's car during her 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. shift Sunday at the Comfort Suites at Virginia Center Commons. She said the investigation has found that during that time Downing checked on the children once.
Defense attorney Linda Lambert said that Downing has been threatened since she has been held in jail.
Downing's 3-month-old daughter, Jade, died Thursday. She had been taken to VCU Medical Center when officers discovered her brother, Jelani, unresponsive at their home in Prince George about 5:45 p.m. Sunday. Emergency responders could not resuscitate him.
