Mark Lindsey is more than an amateur sports racing enthusiast recognized as the 2002 Mid-Atlantic Road Racing Champion and Sports Car Club of America’s 2005 Driver of the Year. He's figured out how to make a living in the business -- managing the motorsports design team for the Baskervill architecture and engineering firm.
An April 2008 profile in Motorsports Industry News chronicles how Lindsey built the growing practice from his first ignoble job: designing the toilet building expansion at Richmond International Raceway (RIR). He did such a good job, RIR asked him to handle a number of smaller jobs like a seating expansion, and then the master plan that maps out RIR's expansion to 150,000 seats over the next 10 years. His experience with RIR led to business at other racing facilities around the country.
In a recent job close to home, Lindsey worked on the Dragons Ridge Motorsports Park in New Kent County, which is part of a larger mixed use development. Lindsey designed buildngs around English-, French- and Italian-style "village" themes, with the motor garages on the first floor and team sleeping areas on the second.
As a race car driver, a crew member in the Rolex Sports Car Series, and a two-car team owner, Lindsey feels that his racing experience lends him first-hand insights into the needs of his clients. "We look at tracks holistically," he says. "We understand NASCAR to Grand Am and how the vehicles are brought in, the services the crew members need, security, and the public areas."
