Media General's latest cost-saving initiative is bad news for the Charlottesville economy but could be good news for Hanover County's.
The Daily Progress in Charlottesville has moved its printing and packaging operations to the Richmond Times-Dispatch plant in Hanover. Both newspapers are owned by Media General. The shift will eliminate 25 positions in Charlottesville, according to Editor & Publisher. There was no word whether the consolidation would create new positions at the Hanover facility.
"This is a difficult business decision we made after weighing the extensive capital investment required to continue the printing operations here," said Daily Progress publisher Lawrence McConnell. Repairing, refurbishing and rewiring the Daily Progress' 25-year-old presses would cost millions of dollars. But Richmond's newer, bigger presses would give advertisers "more options for use of color."
