Want hard data that people are driving less? According to the Richmond Metropolitan Authority, traffic at the main Powhite Parkway toll plaza has been falling since February in month-to-month comparisons with 2007.

Some 543,000 fewer drivers have passed through the tolls so far this year than at the same point in 2007, reports Richmond BizSense. The fall-off continued through the summer months, reaching a 7.3 percent decline in traffic in June before easing a bit in July.

Chesterfield residents need to suck it up and start driving other routes and leave the RMA to die in it's own stupidity. Chesterfield residents have put up with the RMA penalty tolls for so long..., it's time to leave the road to the RMA to contend with and realize they need to TAX Richmond with the tolls not ONLY Chesterfield.

I'd like to see the "hard data" on the extra delay at the River Road-Huguenot Road intersection. That seems to have gone up.

Also, many companies and the state government are now letting employees telework and work flexible schedules which cuts down on the number of commuters on the roads.

This doesn't prove that people are driving less, it proves that people are taking the Powhite less. I personally quit taking it as my daily commute route sometime back in May because of the ridiculous backups due to construction and the impending toll increases, and so have my co-workers commuting from Midlothian. There are two or three other commuting options that bypass the toll plazas and don't take much more time (if any), and we save about $75 per month in the process.
