Sharpies, those brightly-colored markers that you can use to color drawings of anything from pumpkins to flowers to cars, are getting a boost from Richmond-based MeadWestvaco Corporation.

Newell Rubbermaid Office Products has selected MeadWestvaco to make the packaging for Sharpies retractable writing instruments. Used will be the firm’s Natralock paperboard based packaging replacing the clamshell-like packaging that Newell Rubbermaid now has.

One advantage with Natralock is that it uses up to 60 percent less plastic and is more environmentally sound. The packaging system also does not result in sharp ends that can cut fingers, according to MeadWestvaco.
