Raheim Watson stared at the floor of his new Church Hill town house, eyes glossed over, as he realized he achieved his goal: to get his family out of the dangerous New York City neighborhood where he grew up.

“It means the world to me,” the 34-year-old Watson said about his new home in Richmond. “It’s hard to articulate. … I promised myself if I didn’t do anything else in life, I’d get (us) out of there.”
