Virginia Union Background
- Began in 1865 as the National Theological Institute proposed by the American Baptist Home Mission Society to train Freedmen to enter the Baptist ministry and later expanded to offer all levels of education to men and women.
- In 1867, Nathaniel Colver took control of the project and rented space at 15th and Franklin Streets known as "The Devil's Half Acre," a holding-pen and punishment center for slaves that still contained whipping posts.
- Later became Wayland Seminary and in 1899 merged with the Richmond Theological Seminary to become Virginia Union University.
- The campus is now located on Lombardy Street and is home to more than 1,700 students.
