By nature, humans are curious creatures. We love to poke, prod, examine and question the world around us.

Curiosity may have killed the cat, but it put humans at the top of the food chain and sealed our status as the smartest species on earth … ever. At least that we know of.

And it's in the spirit of our ever-curious nature that Richmond.com launches its newest column, "Why Richmond, Why?!?"

We at Richmond.com have dedicated our careers to trying to answer Richmonders' questions before they're even asked: What to do, where to eat, what to see, where to go. But now we're turning to you for the questions.

So what do you want to know, Richmond?

Do you want to know what's happening in your neighborhood? Then just ask. Want to know which stores will be opening in the new shopping center down the street? Ask. What about why you can't take your dog to certain parks in the city, or why parking and traffic are a mess by you or how is it that workers can dig a human-size hole in a street in the morning that's then safe enough to drive over at night? Ask, ask and ask.

We'll do the research and answer, answer, answer. If you live in Richmond, Chesterfield, Henrico, Hanover or any area in-between and you have a question pertaining to … anything, then just ask. Construction, traffic, roads, city planning, transportation, new shops or restaurants, local government, events or local life … we accept any and all questions then we make a few phone calls and get them answered.

So what are you waiting for Richmond, we're all ears.

When will the Powhite Parkway toll project be done?
-- David, Bon Air

According to Linda McElroy, public relations manager for Richmond Metropolitan Authority, Powhite Parkway is going to open in phases with the whole thing done by the fall. The southbound cash lanes (meaning not SmartTag) will be open in April. The current southbound lanes that you drive on will be the express lanes, set to open this summer. Once the southbound lanes are done, RMA will start working on the northbound lanes.

Delightfully though, come summer, the southbound lanes will all be operational, with three express lanes that let SmartTag users speed through at the regular expressway speed (a speed that McElroy says is 45 mph). And, just a heads up, SmartTag is about to be no more. VDOT is doing away with the "term" and plans to start calling them E-ZPass. No one has to change or do anything; it's just a new name that matches what other states use.

I heard Regency Square Mall is closing, is that true?
-- Jenny, Richmond

Not according to the people at Taubman, the company that owns the mall. "There's absolutely no truth to that rumor at all." So shop on, Richmond.

Why is my recycling only picked up every other week instead of weekly like my trash?
-- Meg, Richmond

I spoke to Kelley Hope, director of public affairs for the Central Virginia Waste Management Authority, back in November for another story and I asked her this very question. Your city (or county) determines how often your recycling is picked up. Richmond and its surrounded counties opt for bi-weekly pick for residents. And residents pay for it.

If the recycling is picked up weekly, it would be more expensive. Currently, according to Hope, Richmond residents pay $1.64 in their monthly utility bill for bi-weekly recycling pick up. Weekly pick up would cost a little less than a dollar more a month, or $2.50 a month for recycling services. But it's not a decision residents can make individually. Your city or county, in this case Richmond, would have to up the pick up for all residents.

So what do you want to know, Richmond? Send questions to: karri.peifer@corp.richmond.com with "Why Richmond, Why?!?" in the subject line.

Brett -- I don't make it a habit or personal policy to argue with snobby, elitist blowhards such as yourself who think they know what's best for everyone (but I'll make an exception here because you seem especially full of yourself in defense of your whiney comrade), but, yes, you are aware enough to get that the laws of supply and demand apply here. Now go sit and fester over that, Ax-Grinder.

Bob, You should know not to mess with the sacred cow, (i.e. Ukrops), less you receive the standard words of wisdom from the "blissfully ignorant" Richmonder. You know the ol’ “if you don’t like it leave” or in this case " if you don't like it don't shop there". Even better is the accusatory "you must have an axe to grind". Does it surprise you then when Ukrop's has so many "knowledgeable" customers like LuvRichmond why the stores don’t offer healthy alternatives? This popular local corporation may be run by charitable souls, but just like any business, they practice the principle of supply and demand. So the answer to your question Bob is simple. The "ignorant masses" demand unhealthy food and Ukrop’s supplies. After all, philanthropists must make the money before it can be “conditionally" donated.

New in Town- Rob's right. You do not STOP. You proceed knowing that the red light you see is for the other traffic. To do otherwise risks the wrath of everyone around you...who have the responsibility to bring it swiftly and cruelly...

News in Town-
Ignore the red, it's for the other traffic

Being new in town from DC, I am learning about Richmond's rev-em-and-run-em red light motorists, and although I am not a supporter of speed trap cameras, I can see how red light cameras would contribute to public safety. The question I have is, when you turn across the median or past a circle on either Laburnum or Monument avenues, you proceed through your green light and then turn to face a red light for the cross traffic, are you supposed to stop? Or do you ignore the red light because it's only there for the cross traffic?

I noticed 5 different motorcycle police with people pulled over one morning last week along my drive downtown on Powhite. I haven't see them since. What was that all about?

Short answer: Because people **like** bacon & cheese, and corn dogs and fried food??? If you don't like Ukrops, you can go find a Whole Foods, or go to Ellwood Thompson. Sounds like you have an ax to grind with Ukrops that really has nothing to do with the food they serve/sell.

I love the idea of your column.

I can never get a straight answer from anyone at Ukrop's on these basic questions. Hopefully, you'll have better luck.

1- Why is ALL of the hot food served at breakfast full of cholesterol (bacon, cheese, etc.)? (They can whip up anything in the store, but they won't.)

2- Why does none of the hot food served at dinner include any green vegetables.? All yellow: potatoes with cheese, french fries, etc.

3- Why is all the hot lunch food fried – chicken, corn dogs, potatoes - and Chinese food?
4- Why does the salad bar feature Ukrop's most fattening tuna salad – loaded with cholesterol and fat, not their lite kind)?

With the much-publicized Ukrop's 10K approaching, it's more than ironic that Ukrop's serves the least healthful food possible while featuring photos of its nutritionists and sponsoring the 10K marathon.
Clearly, Ukrop's profits from fattening up Richmonders, then helping Richmonders burn it off. Very sad, given its "status as fine corporate citizens." There is a genuine need for the media to ask Ukrop's why, not just take its advertising dollars.

Please let me know if you think it would be wise to speak with someone else at richmond.com about this?

Thanks.

Speaking of the Powhite project, I just saw a sign on Forest Hill stating the Powhite entrance would be closed for one month in March?! What's up with that? Does it impact the entrance from east and westbound Forest Hill or just eastbound?
