A Monumental Challenge

Can you name the monuments of Monument Avenue?

A Monumental Challenge

In lieu of our usual "20 Questions" feature in which we ask one person 20 questions, recently Richmond.com has been asking 20 people one question.

This week we wanted to know, could the average Richmonder identify all six of the monuments on Monument Avenue? After all, Monument Avenue is one of Richmond's best-known landmarks. And any Richmonder worth his salt should be able to rattle off all six of these historic and important local figures … right?

Apparently not.

Each day dozens of students, professors, residents and office workers pass Richmond.com's Fan District office, just a few blocks away from J.E.B. Stuart, the third least recognized monument on Monument Ave. So Richmond.com staffers stood in front of our building at lunchtime one day and asked the question, "How many monuments on Monument Avenue can you name?"

The answer was a resounding, way fewer than six. From the absurd, with answers like George Jefferson, to the implausible, like a monument to Ulysses S. Grant (as though any Confederate sympathizer would ever allow it) we received an array of responses … only a few of which were right.

Ironically, the vast majority of respondents knew the Arthur Ashe monument even though Monument Avenue was started as a memorial to Confederate Virginian Civil War participants. Even more ironic, only one person guessed (correctly) that Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederacy, had his own monument.

For the record, in order of east to west, the monuments are: J.E.B. Stuart, Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis, Stonewall Jackson, Matthew Fontaine Maury (that's the globe one) and Arthur Ashe.

But let's hear what our passerbys had to say:

Michael Reda
"I know Jackson and there's that guy who looks like he's hitting children … oh yeah, Ashe."

Lauren P.
"Stuart, Lee, Arthur Ashe and who's that giant globe of the ocean guy?"

Moses Wright
"I know them all: Arthur Ashe, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, George Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin."

Brian D.
"Ashe, Lee and Grant."

Thelma T.
"None. No, truly, I know none of them."

Daniel and Elissa
"Arthur Ashe, Robert E. Lee and I know Washington is over there somewhere."

John C.
"Lee, Jackson, Arthur Ashe, J.E.B Stuart and Marshall."

Christen Duxbury
"Arthur Ashe, Robert E. Lee, the guy with the globe, Stonewall Jackson and Jefferson Davis."

Ben Stevens
"Jackson and Ashe."

Jackie P.
"J.E.B Stuart, Lee, Matthew Fontaine Maury, Ashe and Stonewall Jackson."

Katherine Georgen and Anneliese Ardist
"J.E.B Stuart, Jackson, Lee and Arthur Ashe."

Shaun A.
"None. For real, none. I mean, I've seen them, but I don't know who they are."

Shawn H.
"Ashe and Lee. That's it."

Leslie
"Maury, Jackson, Lee and Ashe."

Lauren Eubank
"Ashe, Jackson and Lee."

Mary N.
"Ashe, Lee, Jeff Davis and Jackson."

Thi N.
"Jackson, Arthur Ashe and Lee."

Victor, Melanie, Allison and their 11-week old cutest-puppy-in-the-world Zena
"Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee."

I would have been able to name them all. And here are some tips for remembering them. Lee Monument is at Allen Ave., J.E.B. is at Stuart Circle, AKA Lombardy and Monument, also the end of Monument Ave. and the beginning of Franklin St. The Davis Monument is at Davis Ave and Monument. Stonewall on Boulevard. Washington and Poe are at the Capitol on East Grace Street. The Statue of Liberty is at Chimborazo Park. And Lincoln is at Tredegar Iron Works. You may have heard the monuments facing north were killed during the war(Stuart and Jackson). Maury is the guy who mapped the trade winds.
