Fall may have officially began on Monday, Sept. 22, and we may be well past prime beach lounging season, but if a little “Shaggin’ on the Boulevard” and a few “Carolina Girls” is what you’re looking for, you don’t even have to leave the city of Richmond.

For the second year in a row (after a hiatus from it’s 15 year run) Richmonders are invited to throw on their hush puppies and enjoy a day of fun in the sun at the Richmond Beach Music Festival.

“The festival started in 1984 and it ran for about 15 years or so and then it was off the radar, so this is our second year of the resurgence, if you will,” said Ron Moody of Ron Moody and the Centaurs, and coordinator of the event.

“I’ve played this music for decades, all the groups are friends of mine, and we think there’s a very viable market for this music. Because it’s very timeless, it’s not a fad or anything, it’s lasted literally for 50 and 60 years.”

With plenty of beach music festivals running up and down the coast of the Carolinas, one has to wonder what the draw is to an event such as this in Richmond.

“The history of the Beach Music Festival in Richmond is great. Back in the day, this event was huge; at one time it was pushing 30,000 people,” Moody said.

“This genre of the music appeals to everyone, and how many other types of music can you see parents and kids enjoying out there together?”

While you’re asked to leave your beach coolers and furry friends at home, there’s plenty you can bring to make this as authentic of a beach trip as possible. So load up the beach chairs, the towels and the umbrellas and “Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy.”

Gates to the festival open at 10 a.m. and the openers The Band of Oz, based out of Raleigh, will take to the stage at noon. The rest of the day boasts a popular and familiar line-up of beach music from Ron Moody and the Centaurs, Chairman of the Board and The Mighty Tams.

If you happen to work up an appetite while reliving those “Myrtle Beach Days,” the festival will have everything from hamburgers and hot dogs, crab cakes and barbecue, ice cream, water, soda and, of course, ice cold beer to quench your thirst.

Even though “that ole beer drinkin’ music” is a genre that anyone from 16 or 60 can appreciate, Moody recommends leaving the tots at home.

“The one thing that we caution people about, is that there is no charge for kids under 12, but it’s really not a kid-oriented event,” Mood said. “They do get in free, but I would really suggest you not bring them out here to this.”

After drawing a crowd of roughly 3,000 people last year, Moody is hoping to exceed that number and keep the party going.

“The core demographic [for beach music] is of course baby-boomers, but it is our goal to try and get a younger audience, who may not have the same historical connection to the music that we boomers do, but that see a great party and want to then make it a great event.”

  • The second annual Richmond Beach Music Festival will take place on Sunday, Sept. 28 at West Creek, located at 12575 West Creek Pkwy. Gates open at 10 a.m. and the first band goes on at noon. Tickets are $30 per person if purchased before Sept. 27, and $35 per person on the day of the event and will be sold at the gate only. Children ages 12 and under are free. Proceeds of the event will go to benefit the Abbey Foundation. For ticket locations, to purchase tickets online and for more information, call 1-800-594-TIXX or visit richmondbeachmusicfestival.com.
