Women Spiders drop one to St. Joseph's

The University of Richmond women's basketball team suffered a 63-50 loss to Saint Joseph's University at the Robins Center on Sunday afternoon. The Spiders fall to 14-6, 5-4 in the conference while Saint Joseph's improves to 13-7, 8-1 in Atlantic 10 action.

Senior Ebony Tanner (Garner, N.C.), who was honored in a pre-game ceremony after scoring her 1,000th point in the Spiders' last game, led all scorers with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Junior Amber Goppert (Malone, N.Y.) was Richmond's second leading scorer with nine points and nine rebounds. Kate Flavin (Englewood, Colo.) contributed seven points, nine rebounds and six steals.

The teams exchanged leads in the game's opening, with seven ties in the first 10 minutes, as neither team held more than a two-point advantage. The seventh, and final, tied score was reached at the 6:53 mark with both teams at 22. Saint Joseph's went on a 13-2 scoring run, taking their first double-digit lead (11) off a three-point basket from Colleen McGahan. A lay-up from Cammy Desmond (Midlothian, Va.) set the halftime score at 26-35.

The Spiders opened the second half missing six of their first seven shots as the Hawks built a 16-point advantage. Saint Joseph's took their largest lead of the game (18) with just under seven minutes remaining on the clock. Richmond attempted a comeback, getting as close as 10, before the Hawks took the 63-50 win.

Richmond struggled from the field, shooting a season-low 31.7%, and connecting on just three three-point baskets. The Spiders won the battle on the boards, grabbing 44 rebounds to the Hawk's 35. Richmond's 50 points were scored by its five starters, as the Spiders had no point production from their bench.

The Spiders travel to Ohio next weekend, first playing Xavier on Friday, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m. and facing Dayton on Sunday, Feb. 9, at 2 p.m.
