Earlier this month, the Richmond Metropolitan Authority announced a toll increase on Powhite Parkway and the Downtown Expressway. Here's a look by the numbers at the RMA:   

$25.7 million

Revenue from the toll roads for fiscal year 2007. That's 0.8 percent more than the $25.1 million in revenue generated during the fiscal year 2006.

$13 million

Total operating expenses for the Expressway System during the fiscal year 2007, which is a 5 percent increase from 2006. The increased costs were for processing the SmarTag/E-Z Pass transactions and increased costs for roadway maintenance.

20 cents

Toll increase for the Forest Hill Avenue ramps and mainline plazas of the Powhite Parkway and Downtown Expressway. It's also the initial amount drivers were required to pay to drive on the Powhite Parkway. The Downtown Expressway started off with 15-cent tolls.

Sept. 8, 2008

When the 20-cent toll increases go into effect. The RMA wanted to finish its open road toll plaza construction on Powhite and wait until after the Labor Day holiday before raising rates.

Number of members on the Richmond Metropolitan Board of Directors that voted March 17 to increase the 50-cent tolls to 70 cents.

Number of RMA board members appointed by the Richmond mayor with the approval of City Council. Current members are Jennifer L. McClellan, Corey Nicholson, (board vice chairman) Herman L. Carter Jr., Charles Breckenridge, A. Peter Brodell and Jacquiline G. Epps.

Number of RMA board members appointed by each of the boards of supervisors in Chesterfield and Henrico counties. Current members for Chesterfield County are Charles Richard White and Charles H. Foster Jr. while Henrico is representated by (board chairman) James L. Jenkins and Reginald H. Nelson IV.

Ex-officio member of the RMA board appointed by the commonewalth of Virginia Transportation Board. That person is currently Gerald P. McCarthy.

Term limits in number of years for RMA board of directors.

June 2008

When five board members terms come up for reappointment. That includes three Richmond representatives, one Henrico representative and one Chesterfield representative. The rest are up for reappointment in June 2010.

Money owed to the city of Richmond by 2022 for its role in the creation of the toll roads.

Richmond Metropolitan Authority created by an act of the General Assembly.

November 1969

When the Boulevard Bridge, still known by many Richmonders today as the Nickel Bridge, stopped costing a nickel. This is when the RMA bought the 2,030-foot bridge and began charging a dime.

SmarTag debuted in Virginia. By spring 2003, the electronic toll collection system transactions outnumbered all other transactions at the mainline plazas during the weekday rush hours.
