The hoopla surrounding this year's presidential campaign has been a mishmash of "expert" political opinions, bumper sticker slogans and nonstop mainstream media campaigning.

But when you get right down to it, who cares what the talking heads have to say.

We at Richmond.com wanted to know what Richmonders thought about the upcoming election. We stopped 10 locals on the street and asked, "Who are you voting for in the presidential election this November?"

Here's what they said. But don't take our word for it, leave your presidential pick in the comments section below.

"Uh, I think Obama, because I support Democracy."

-- Renu B., The Fan

"I’m still undecided, leaning towards Ron Paul. The economy is important to me."

-- Morgan P., The Fan

"Barack Obama, because I’m a Democrat and Republicans suck."

-- Kevin M., Chesterfield

"I can’t vote because I’m a felon, but if I could it would be for Barack."

-- James H., West End

"Uh, that’s a hard question … Nader. It would be nice to see an underdog win."

-- Molly M., Carytown

"Obama. I was in Iraq and I feel we shouldn’t be there."

-- Jordan R., Church Hill

"That’s personal. I don’t give out that information."

-- Mark H., The Fan

"Barack Obama. I’ve really looked at him, and I’m ready for change."

-- Jasma H., Church Hill

"Barack Obama. I think he’s going to bring about change and end the war in Iraq. McCain’s wrong about everything, I believe."

-- Robert M., The Fan

"I don’t know yet."

-- Gabrielle, C. Southside

@ Brent way to be objective on the subject, it did not seem to bother you that Obama is one of those snake handling christian poloticians you speak of because every christian is a snake handler, you lost credibility there. Now all poloticians claim some religion because they have to to win a large ammount of religious votes however i find few of them actually practice what they preach and that includes Obama. I agree with you on one thing all poloticians are liars so my vote this year goes to no one!

If I was forced to choose between the two. i would say McCain has a slight lead. Barack is a great speaker but i don't think he has any real ideas or solutions. So the people he hires will be doing much of the difficult decisions. McCain is the corporate play toy, but he will make decisions that he will ultimately own up to. I can see Barack point the finger or pass the buck to someone else. Either way, id rather follow a guy who says "that's my fault" as opposed to the guy who says "well he told me it would work."

Whatever... it depends on what you are looking for in a leader. If you want business as usual then 26 years as a politician is great experience. If you are looking for a sea change in the way government runs then the less experience you have in the political game that is our government, the better.

@Amanda. That is true - but you really want someone with two years experience as a senator over someone who has been in politics for over 26 years???

@Whatever "do we really want on-the-job training for our next president"

Last I checked... neither candidate has been president before... so BOTH will be trained 'on the job'.

It is not that I want to pay more taxes, but that I find the percentage for the wealthy too high! I don't believe because you are in the higher income bracket, that you should have to pay for social programs that obviously do not work in most cases! Most of the regulations regarding deductions on taxable income do not apply the higher your income becomes. To Sad - I guess socialism instead of communism would have been the better choice. The two are so closely linked! To JD - point well taken. The problem is in the abuse of social programs. I bet individuals working 80 hours a week or working more than one job to keep a roof over their head are not the same ones that are abusing the social programs.

I’m going with Obama. Obama is too conservative and religious for my taste but McCain embodies all that disgust me about politicians. He is basically the most sleazy person in Washington. And Palin….she makes Ralph Reed look like an atheist. I’m sick of insane Christians trying to govern. She would probably swear in on a box of rattle snakes if elected. He’s slow, she’s crazy and they are both liars. I’d rather give my money to social programs in Washington than have it stolen by multinational corporations. I’m not ready to hand over our oil and remaining environmental integrity to British Petroleum and Royal Dutch Shell so that they can sell our oil at market rate on the world market. Both candidates need to talk about nationalizing oil drilled in this country. They are asking us to fund the exploration done by foreign companies and to destroy our coasts. They should at least offer in return some price reduction guarantees. Iran barely has a military and a more robust economy doesn’t justify a pointless and unwarranted new cold war with Russia. McCain has proven that he has no integrity and has a hard-on for a military industrial complex economy. Garbage!

Richmond.com Article Feedback - Leave your comment today!

McCain for sure! He might not be the best but he is much more qualified than Obama! Obama is all talk and might as well be preaching socialism! We need to shrink the government not expand it beyond its current over reaching state.

I couldn't ever vote for a canidate that wants to take more of tax payer dolars and spend them on social programs. The group of college kids behind Obama have no idea what it feels like to pay taxes!

What is no one allowed to say in print or on air Obama's last name????? Also, critisize Palin all you wan for having an unwed (sorry engaged) pregnant daughter - Obama's mom gave birth to him at 17. For those of you that want traceable, proven facts about Obama - get the book Obamanation and look up the footnotes for yourself- very scary! McCain all the way!!!

I find it funny that in the poll most people chose Obama but in the comments most people chose McCain. I myself will not vote for Obama. Too many red flags are going up when I think about him. Everybody always talks about what a great speaker he is BUT my whole life I have always heard "Don't just say it, prove it." America must realize that peoples words are weak (For example, consider marriages and wedding vows. Half of America doesn't even know what the vows mean). We need someone that will prove it with their actions, not someone who can talk the talk but not walk the walk.

OBAMA!
The Republicans care about taking care of themselves and their money. McCain doesn't like Palin anymore than the Democrats do. He is using her to win the race and in the process nominating a total backwards redneck!

Thank God Ralph Nader is on the ballot here. Americans deserve better than the Olympic Games of Bullsh*t, that the 2008 Presidential election is turning out to be. I can't pinch my nose hard enough not to gag at the thought of throwing my vote away on a Democrat or a Republican. McCain and Palin are out touch with reality, a millionaire who doesn't remember how many homes he owns and an obnoxious, clueless female sportscaster from Alaska. Obama is too scared to debate Nader on tv. What a wimp! Obama, man-up and debate Nader.

Can we make it mandatory for voters to take an IQ test. People with no knowledge should not be able to vote if they are not up on the real issues - stop listening to the news media & celebs - study the facts yourself and make an educated decision - Do this and you will know that Obama is a poor decision.

I'm ashamed to be an american looking at the majority of these comments. You want Nader to win b/c he's an underdog? Bob Bar b/c you're against the two party system? People misquoting facts about Obama having less experience than Palin? Democrats and liberals throwing around political slogans like you only get your info from campaign ads? I haven't seen one intelligent comment here from a conservative, liberal, or independent and I'm ashamed all of you are allowed to vote.

Richmond.com Article Feedback - Leave your comment today!

to doesn't matter, I agree with many of your ideas however I don't think more laws are the answer. We have way too many as it is. If that's what they based their salaries off of, imagine how many more useless ones we would have to endure and what remaining freedom we have would be diminished.. lobbyists definitely need to be banned

Richmond.com Article Feedback - Leave your comment today!

@Whatever: You can't have a flat tax accross the boards because the minimal for cost of living is fixed. Someone making today's criminal minimal wage can barely get by paying for basic goods and services. Realistically, these people often go without what most would consider essential goods and services, and they often hold down multiple jobs to do so. Most would say thats incentive to get an education or a better paying job, but that's incredibly easy to say when you aren't working 80 hours a week just to keep a roof over your head. Unfortunately, there are those that take advantage of the system as well. What we need are better systems to weed these people out from the people that truly do need social services like Welfare. The upper class pay more in taxes in our system because they can afford to. These are the people with more disposable income, and even though they most likely worked very hard to reach the position they are in, their high incomes make them prime candidates to absorb higher taxation. Unfortunately these problems are never as easy as they seem on paper.

Richmond.com Article Feedback - Leave your comment today!

It's very simple. People like Obama - but again do we really want on-the-job training for our next president? As far as paying taxes, why can't it be the same for everyone, regardless of income, like 10-15% across the board? I think it needs to be fair for everyone. Why should someone who works their a** off and makes a good living have to pay more in taxes than someone who doesn't work their a** off AND they get to pay less? Keep in mind that there are a lot of people who did not inherit their wealth- they actually worked hard to get it. The biggest problem is welfare. I say give them all of the resources and training available for free AND if they aren't off in two years- regardless of the number of children they have - screw em.

Richmond.com Article Feedback - Leave your comment today!

Does it really matter who wins? They'll spend 4 years bickering with the other party and congress while nothing gets done. It takes an act of terrorism or a natural disaster for anything to happen in DC now. This is why voter turnout sucks, the candidates are all worthless airbags. I promise this, I promise that blah blah blah....it rarely gets done. Give us some real 3rd party candidates and congress members. Better yet, make congress earn their pay...pay them based on the number of laws passed. Get rid of their salaries and ban lobbyists.

Richmond.com Article Feedback - Leave your comment today!

What was up, will come down. What is down will go back up and so on and so forth.

Work hard, be patient, get an education (the loans are worth it-trust me) be kind, grab the opportunities we have now stop waiting for the ones promised from others.

Richmond.com Article Feedback - Leave your comment today!

To Karla: You can pay more in taxes if you want. I'm okay with ending the way the system currently is. It certainly doesn't make SENSE for the middle class to have more taken out of our pockets. I'll do the math, which I'm pretty good at considering I have a graduate degree ... and you can do the research on the tax cuts that the Bush administration has provided for the wealthy (which McCain intends to extend). By the way ... I have a great job and make great money for my age. This doesn't mean that I can't have compassion for the working class. This economy only works for the rich and I'm afraid that under the Republican party, it will remain that way. Go Dems!!!!

Richmond.com Article Feedback - Leave your comment today!

YOMAMMA, Wow, that was a great joke. Truly, knowing that people like you exist and knowing that you have probably procreated makes me die a little bit inside. You will probably create more morons to populate this poor earth. I find it shocking that you don't have a formal education, Karla!! You just seem so well-versed in politics. Obama equals voting for communism? Socialism, maybe.. Do any readers of this site have any kind of education or sense?

Middle class people, like myself, should pay more in taxes. The "rich" are in a higher tax bracket so they STILL pay more taxes than most. Why should the higher income citizens pay more taxes? That doesn't make any since. Why don't we all pay the same percentage based on our income? Do the math...anyone making more than you, would be paying more in taxes! I think if you vote for Obama, that you are voting for communism. I don't have a college education but I figure this - work harder, make more money! Take care of yourself and don't rely on others. That is NOT the governments job!

Richmond.com Article Feedback - Leave your comment today!

Obama. Of course!

Richmond.com Article Feedback - Leave your comment today!

Obama is a total joke. Less experience that Palin. All talk all BS just like most Democrats. Here is the difference:

John McCain and Barack Obama somehow ended up at the same barbershop. As they sat there, each being worked on by a different barber, not a word was spoken. The barbers were even afraid to start a conversation, for fear it would turn to politics. As the barbers finished their shaves, the one who had Obama in his chair reached for the aftershave. Obama was quick to stop him saying, 'No thanks, my wife Michelle will smell that and think I've been in ahouse,' The second barber turned to McCain and said, 'How about you?' McCain replied, 'Go ahead, my wife doesn’t know what the inside of ahouse smells like.'

Richmond.com Article Feedback - Leave your comment today!

Ron Paul if it would make a difference. since it wouldn't, McCain/Palin.

Richmond.com Article Feedback - Leave your comment today!

My vote is for Obama... I'm ready for change that is desperately needed in our economy and society. I don't understand how it's a good idea for the rich to pay less taxes while the middle class ... pay more. There is something very skewed about that! OBAMA all the way!!!
