Gov. vetoes bill requiring schools to ID sexually explicit material

Gov. Terry McAuliffe on Monday vetoed legislation that would have allowed parents to opt out their children from instructional materials identified as “sexually explicit” and required schools to offer academic alternatives.

In a statement released with the veto of House Bill 516, McAuliffe said local school boards are most knowledgeable and “best positioned” to decide what instructional materials constitute “appropriate literary and artistic works that will expand students’ horizons and enrich their learning experiences.”
