RICHMOND -- Police were searching today for a masked gunman who robbed two people on Virginia Commonwealth University's main academic campus.
No shots were fired and neither victim was injured in the robbery, which police said occurred at 12:50 a.m. as a 22-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman walked along the 1000 block of West Franklin Street.
The two were confronted by a male with a black semiautomatic handgun who demanded cash and cell phones, and when the victims complied, the suspect fled on foot west toward Ryland Street.
The suspect was described as black, about 5 feet, 10 inches tall with a medium build and wearing all black clothing and a black mask.
VCU and Richmond police flooded the area and brought in a tracking dog, but they were unable to find the suspect.
Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000 or text Crime Stoppers at 274637, using the key word "Tip" followed by their tip. Both methods are anonymous.
VCU spokesman Michael Kelly said one of the victims is a student at the school, where summer classes are currently in session.
