Last Monday afternoon, the noisy training room in the field house at Douglas Freeman High was filled with athletes, mostly football players, nursing sore ankles, shoulders, necks and knees, some from the previous Friday night’s game.

Dennis Spurrier was moving from one to another — taping, examining and bantering — when a volleyball player walked in with a bloody nose.
