Two state senators from large population centers will join Terry McAuliffe on the Democratic ticket – Ralph S. Northam of Norfolk for lieutenant governor and Mark R. Herring of Loudoun County for attorney general.

In a statewide primary with light turnout, Northam defeated Aneesh P. Chopra, a former top technology official under then Gov. Timothy M. Kaine and President Barack Obama. Herring beat former federal prosecutor Justin Fairfax.

In other results of note, Del. Rosalyn Dance, D-Petersburg overcame a challenge by political newcomer Evandra Thompson, and two veteran Republican delegates,  Beverly Sherwood of Frederick and Joe May of Loudoun lost their seats to conservative challengers.
