Star Scientific and CEO Jonnie Williams Sr. have given more than $100,000 in political contributions to Gov. Bob McDonnell and at least $145,000 in gifts and loans to the first family. Here are some key dates involving Williams and the first family:
April 2011 : Williams pays for the airfare as the governor, first lady and their two daughters fly to Houston to watch VCU play in college basketball’s Final Four.
Spring 2011 : Williams treats Maureen McDonnell to a high-end shopping spree in New York, purchasing thousands of dollars in clothes for the first lady, including a suede jacket that cost at least $10,000.
May 2011 : Williams writes a $50,000 check from his trust to Maureen McDonnell.
June 2011 : On June 1, the first lady travels to Florida with Williams and speaks about Anatabloc, Star Scientific’s dietary supplement, during a presentation to investors and researchers. Three days later, the McDonnells’ daughter Cailin marries at the Executive Mansion. Williams gives a $15,000 gift used to pay for the catering.
Summer 2011 : Williams pays $2,268 to cover part of Gov. Bob McDonnell’s annual vacation to Smith Mountain Lake. The McDonnell family borrows Williams’ Ferrari for the three-hour drive back to Richmond.
August 2011 : At Maureen McDonnell’s request, Williams buys a $6,500 Rolex watch that she gives to the governor as a Christmas present.
Later that August, the first lady’s office organizes a luncheon at the Executive Mansion for the launch of Anatabloc. The governor’s office says the event, paid for by the governor’s political action committee, was for Star Scientific to award research grants to two public university health systems in Virginia.
October 2011 : Maureen McDonnell is listed as the “featured guest” at an Oct. 18 luncheon in Richmond promoting the supplement at the Westin Hotel, according to an online posting by an investors group that was following the Anatabloc rollout.
The first lady flies to Flint, Mich., on Oct. 22 with the executive protection unit of the Virginia State Police — the same day Star Scientific holds another of its “Breakthrough Technology Conferences” promoting the supplement in nearby Grand Blanc.
March/Spring 2012 : Williams writes two checks to MoBo Real Estate Partners, one for $50,000 and another for $20,000. The governor owns a stake in the corporation, associated with Virginia Beach rental properties he purchased with his wife and sister, both named Maureen. The governor says he considers the payments loans.
July 2012 : The first lady’s office includes Anatabloc in a gift bag presented to a number of first spouses when they visit the Executive Mansion as part of the National Governors Association meeting, which was held in Williamsburg.
December 2012 : Williams gives a $10,000 gift to the McDonnells’ daughter Jeanine in advance of her May 2013 wedding.
