Little Taste in Little Mexico

After good chips and salsa, the meal just went downhill

There's an old joke I should start with to preface this review. Two old women are at a restaurant, and one says, "The food at this place is really terrible." The other one says, "Yeah, I know; and such small portions, too."

Well, at the very least, Little Mexico remedies the latter part. If nothing else, a trip here gets you a lot of food for a reasonable price. It makes perfect sense to locate this restaurant so close to Virginia Commonwealth University since college students are guaranteed to be able to bring home lots of leftovers with them without breaking the bank. That's a good thing, I guess.

I just wish the food were better. It's not quite "really terrible," but it's certainly no great shakes as far as Mexican food goes.

The good? The complementary chips and salsa bowl is terrific. The chips are thin and crunchy, and the salsa tastes fresh: lots of cilantro and tomatoes with just the right amount of heat. This may seem like a silly thing to highlight, but I rank Mexican restaurants by that initial chips and salsa platter, and Little Mexico has a darn good one.

Unfortunately, it all went downhill from there. My friend and I split a mushroom quesadilla ($3.25) appetizer for starters. We got two huge portions (more than we could eat, but it's the thought that counts) to compensate for the relative mediocrity of the dish itself. The cheese was pervasive but tasteless, and the mushrooms were slightly rubbery. It wasn't offensive to eat, just sort of … meh.

For the main entrée, I ordered the Veggie Yucatan ($9.95) plate. It seemed promising — mushrooms, tomatoes, onions, zucchini, squash, and red and green peppers, all served over Spanish rice with guacamole (it also came with sour cream, but I'm not a big fan of that. Watching my figure, you might say). I practically got a Dutch oven-sized amount of food, too.

That said, I couldn't have been more disappointed. Maybe it was a "too many cooks" situation, but none of those flavors registered except the tomatoes, and they weren't that special. The mushrooms were chewy, the onions were too crunchy, and the zucchini, squash and peppers were limp and bland.

To call the textures "inconsistent" would be an understatement. Even the rice was slightly over-done. Only the guacamole had any distinct flavor, and there was not that much to spread around and salvage the whole mess.

My friend's mixed fajitas ($11.75) were similarly abundant and unimpressive. The vegetables mixed in her dish (red, yellow and green peppers, and onions and tomatoes) were just as overcooked as mine were, and she had the added "bonus" of enjoying dry chicken and tender, yet flavorless, steak alongside them. Her refried beans were good, but when you pop them from a can (and these tasted like they were), it's really hard to screw them up.

We finished off with an order of Chocolate Flan ($2.95) that was nigh inedible. I'm biased; I like a firm flan, and this was pretty gooey and drippy. But even still, the custard had no real flavor to speak of, and the chocolate was just bitter. For the first time in my dining history, I asked to have a dish taken back. In all fairness, our waitress was very apologetic about this, and she did not charge us for the dessert.

I can't recommend Little Mexico. Yes, the prices are reasonable. Yes, the service is courteous and friendly. Yes, the food is abundant. It's just not very tasty. You can do a whole lot better picking Mexican cuisine; you got Nacho Mama's right up the street, as well as the awesome and underrated El Caporal off Broad Street near Regency Mall.

Compared to those, Little Mexico is just small potatoes.

I actually agree with this review (mostly). Saying he judged them unfairly because he ordered a non-meat dish, when he did order right off the restaurant's own menu, is silly. If certain foods can't be expected to be prepared well by a restaurant, or type or restaurant, they shouldn't be offered. I myself had a shrimp quesadilla, and while the shrimp themselves were tasty, the dish overall was pretty blah, much like the reviewer said. My date's chicken flautas were fine, but also unremarkable; he dumped a bunch of hot sauce on them, which helped. The service was above average, however, which is important. The music wasn't too loud either, which is nice when you're trying to talk and eat, not chug Coronas. The ladies room was adequate and clean, and the soap was well-stocked (very important, or else how are the staff washing?). Unfortunately, our seats (booth) were rather uncomfortable. It felt as though the seat back was trying to push me into the table. The chips and salsa were indeed fine, but that's pretty hard to screw up, so I don't think that's a very good basis for judgment. If I were to recommend something else, though, I'd pick Viva Mexicana in Carytown as the true heir to the former El Rio Grande, not Nacho Mama's which is more of a Chi-chi's-type establishment.

I totally disagree with this review. I must say that this is not the first negative review I've read about Little Mexico, I've read one other. Coincidentally both reviews have been written by Vegetarians, and I'm sorry to say, but Mexican food is not "vegetarian". In the article above this person mentioned Nacho Mamas as being a better Mexican restaurant...., yeah sure iit is if you want nasty, fake, Americanized Mexican food. I am Mexican, and Ive eaten at Nacho Mamas, and its anything but Mexican Food. As for El Caporal, I can't say anything bad, it is a good Mexican Restaurant. Little Mexico in my opinion, is great, if you want fake stick to Taco Bell or Nacho Mamas.

Oh, Josh, here we go again. Complaining about sour cream? I don't even know where to go with that. Basing judgement of an entire restaurant on a condiment and 2 hippie vegetarian entrees? Stop it. Little Mexico executes the ubiquitous American-Mexican menu well in a quite comfortable and pleasant environment. Nacho Mama's is your recommendation? You must really hate your readers.

It does seem harsh to judge on one visit. I'm rather particular about Mexican restaurants; I also realize that any restaurant should be judged on at least two visits.

As for other "Mexican" restaurants in town - Nacho Mama's isn't really true Mexican. Try Taqueria del Sol (Broad St., in Marshall's shopping center), or El Toro Loco (near Willow Lawn on the corner of Staples Mill and Caskie).

Both these restaurants offer authentic Mexican food at reasonable prices. On multiple visits, both included extremely fresh ingredients and great service. I can't speak highly enough of either. I also can't choose a favorite - both have high points that are vastly different.

Happy Dining!

For such a scathing review (whether true or not), I would think another visit would be required. The posters above point out several good reasons to support this: the reviewer not trying a decent range of the menu, the chance that it could have been an off night, etc.

Telling someone to go to another restaurant at the end of the review is asking for trouble. And seriously now, Nacho Mama's? That's the worst in town, unless you're into jumbo sized blueberry "margaritas."

I could not DISAGREE more with this review. I am a huge lover of Mexican food and have been to just about every place in Richmond. For a typical Mexican restaurant, which by all means Little Mexico is, the food is top notch. And by "typical" I mean, has a standard Mexican food menu which excludes places like Nacho Mama's, Bandito's, Baja Bean, etc. (these all have unique menus) However, for salsa, Bandito's has the best I've tried of anywhere, they put the right amount of jalapeños in the food processor, blend it just right, the chips are warm and not greesy.

Back to Little Mexico. The reason I think this place has the best standard fare Mexican is because their ingredients taste the most fresh out of anyone's. I ordered the fried beef chimichanga which included 2 medium sized perfectly rolled chimis, guac, beans, rice, and lettuce. The beef was flavorful, the tortillas were tightly rolled and fried perfectly (slightly crunchy on the outside but tender near the meat and golden brown). The sauce complimented the meat very well and was neither bland or over powering, just right. The white cheese was melted to an almost thick liquid that soaked into the slightly crunchy outside of the tortilla making each bite savory. (Using a chip to scoop the remaining gooey cheese, rice and beans was heaven). The lettuce on top of the 2 chimis was cool and crisp...NOT soft and wilted like I have commonly found at other establishments. The guac had a perfectly ripened green color which immediately told me they didn't use too young or old of an avocado. They waited until they were at their zenith of flavor to make this crucial condiment.

The rice was moist, tender, and stuck together nicely for great shoveling action with a fork, and had a nice toasted flavor.

The only complaint I would have is about the beans. The liquid surrounding the beans was just little too thin for my liking. some people like it this way, but not me, I like it thick. But they used a darker bean than what you would find with re-fried beans so the texture made sense, just not my thing.

I think Josh Katz (writer of this piece) needs to revisit Little Mexico and actually order a more Mexican styled dish, not a salad over rice, or "mushroom" quesadilla (of course that's going to be boring!). Try a burrito, a taco, enchilada, tostada, chile, etc. I don't believe his review can be relied upon because he obviously didn't try a dish representative of the majority of people's liking. He should cover the vegetarian scene....

Last but not least, the atmosphere is very nice too. It's a very clean place, new, modern looking with big windows, and they don't play cheesy Mexican music the whole time.

I think you need to give Little Mexico another chance. The chips and salsa are good, but the beef taco salad and speedy gonzales are great! The menu is the same as Mexico on Horsepen and any lover of this is sure to give Little Mexico a try!

I could not agree more with this review. I, too, often judge a Mexican restaurant by the chips and salsa. This place is one of the best. The rest of the food, though? Not so much. Like this review says, it's not really terrible, but it's not good either.
