When you think of Ninjas, you can't help but recall the Ninja Warrior characters, dressed in black with eye-hole masks. I'm not sure what that has to do with the Fan's newest sushi restaurant unless it's supposed to indicate their fierce dedication to delivering authentic Japanese sushi and sashimi.

Sushi Ninja, on North Robinson, opened a few months ago and is already garnering critical praise from the foodies of this city.

Don't expect a pseudo-Japanese décor here, but you will get some of the freshest fish in town, flown in daily from Hawaii. The friendly and knowledgeable chef says the restaurant's supplier is also the purveyor of the Emperor of Japan and I have to say that the ruby red A+ tuna was fit for a king.

We started with the Crab Dip and a cold Asahi (there are several good Japanese beers if you're not a sake drinker). A large ice-cream-scoop size pile of delicate, shredded crab was surrounded by the thinnest wontons I've ever eaten. They literally melted in your mouth and had an intriguing, slightly lemony flavor. I could have made a meal on this alone and was loathe to share it with my dinner companion.

We followed that with the Sashimi Salad, which was our first introduction to the top-grade deepwater tuna. The bed of greens was dressed with a subtle, slightly citrus-influenced vinaigrette and topped with the ends of the various fish cuts from the evening service that were too small or asymmetrical to use on the entrée plates.

From the rolls, we chose the Shogun Shrimp, one of Sushi Ninja's signature dishes. The rolls were wrapped in tuna, cradling a tempura shrimp, which added a nice crunch. Portions are perfect for sharing, with six pieces to each order, and the accompanying dressing made it unnecessary to dip into the condiment tray.

"Sushi Ninja, on North Robinson, opened a few months ago and is already garnering critical praise from the foodies of this city."

IF YOU GO:

Sushi Ninja
204 N Robinson
(804) 864-1962

Hours:

Lunch: Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Dinner: Monday through Saturday 5:30 to 10 p.m.

Reservations are recommended for weekends. Restaurant is nonsmoking.

From the sashimi list, we chose the Setting Sun platter, which is a selection of tunas from ahi to A+ that are artfully arranged to resemble a sunset.

Again, the quality of the fish from the slightly oily white to the rich red A+ was so high that we used our soy and wasabi sparingly. The chef, who was chatting up customers at the bar and explaining the dishes, checked in regularly with us to see how we liked each dish. He even brought us a taste of the salmon he was working on, which had a lovely and delicate flavor that tends to get lost in cooked salmon.

While you can spend up to $200 on a Chef's Choice sashimi platter, prices were very reasonable from around $6 and up for starters, around $12 to $15 for most rolls and $18 to $20 for sashimi platters.

The Tuesday Fancy Date Night is perfect for the Fan's college crowd, with salad, soup, entrée and dessert for $36 and Sushi Ninja is also open for lunch with a mid-day special called the Lunch Monk for a mere $6.50.

Sushi pros will relish the high quality of the fish, while novices will find the helpful chefs running commentary a great introduction to the pleasures of sashimi.

I found the prices to be fairly reasonable for the portion sizes. However, I am from San Jose, CA so perhaps I need to trade my money in for Confederate Dollars, so I can complain with ya'll. None of the servers hand fed me, but otherwise I was happy. It took about 24 minutes exactly to get the sushi, which was ok. The fish was great. I am suprised at the people who spent time giving this quaint little joint crap. You would think this was the culinary epi-center of the world. I had no idea how cultured people here were, amazing. World view people, world view!

Went on Friday night. The place was only half full and it still took almost two hours to get our food--it was ridiculous. The service was ATROCIOUS. The guy waiting on us literally ignored us, but fawned over the table in front of us. We had to ask another waitress for some edamame after about 45 minutes because we were starving.

When the food finally came out, we weren't impressed. The $50 sampler was skimpy--there was no way you could construe that as getting your money's worth. Yes, the fish was clearly a high quality, but the rice wasn't even seasoned with vinegar as it should be!

We will not be going back. The place has a cool vibe, but he'll have to get a whole new waitstaff, bring the prices down to a level that's competetive with other great places around here, and get some help actually making the sushi (so you don't have to wait forever)if he wants to make it. Shame.

This restaurant is the worst in Richmond. Service was horrible, portions were a joke, menu selection is very limited and the sushi rolls weren't even rolled tight. The price was ridiculous. It won't last long.

I ordered 5 pieces of sashimi and they brought it out by itself and said I could not have any rice since they were running low and needed to save it for rolls. Basically, my whole dinner was 5 pieces of tuna on a plate. Tasty, but not that filling. I had to go to Curbside for a grilled cheese afterward to fill up. I could not believe that would not give me any rice or offer anything else. Insane.

I wish I had read these reviews before going to Sushi Ninja last night. Many elements of my experience were similar to others posted here. My wife and I arrived around 6pm, and there were only a couple of other tables seated. Our waitress came promptly to take our drink order. My wife got a glass of wine, I ordered a beer. "Sorry, we are out of that." OK, I say, I'll just have a Miller Lite. "Sorry, out of that also." Huh? I asked her to just bring me what they had (which turned out to be pretty good).

We placed our orders, but not before the waitress informed us they were out of salmon and another fish I don't recall. Salmon is one of my favorites, so that was disappointing. About 20 minutes later we got our Miso soup. It was good - different than what many other sushi places serve.

Once our food arrived, it was good. I was disappointed in the selection of fish in the Chef's Nigiri selection. Two prawn, two shrimp, two eel, two octopus/squid, two tuna, and 4 other pieces I wasn't sure of. I couldn't help but thinking that if they had salmon I could have ditched some of the eel or prawn...

Halfway through our meal we had our drinks replenished. My wife asked for a refill on her wine and was told that there was no more - she had the last of the last bottle. Again, huh??

Overall a very disappointing experience. I doubt I will give them another try - just not worth the effort when there are so many other good sushi choices in town.

There is a lot of sushi places, and honestly it's good--if you aren't going to nitpick the hell out of it. The fish is fresh , it's cut well enough to still be delicious, it's better than grabbing a burger, and it's undeniable one of the best sushi you can get in Richmond, VA. If aren't ok with saying THE best, okay. But it's worth trying. Go in and just enjoy yourself with some friends and family.

To me doesn't matter how fresh the fish are when they receive them if it wasn't prep/preserve properly it would degrade by the time the fish hits the plate. The head chef really doesn't know how to cut the fish, my nigiri was much butchered. The head chefs’ lack of sushi knowledge also showed when I asked them if they have tamago, with they don’t. Any respectable sushi place would know how to make a good tamogo and most of people who really knows sushi would order tamogo nigiri to test the flavor of the rice and how skilled is the chef making both the rice and tamogo.

Ok, I will say that the service is probably not some of the best--the wait staff is slow, confused, and unfriendly. I will say though, that the sushi is some of the freshest fish I've eaten in awhile. The rolls are delicious, the sashimi is mouth-watering. The prices can be a bit surprising, but I'm completely sure they spend that much for the fish quality. For someone to deny that is pretty astonishing to me. But, the head chef, Mike, spends a bit too much time chatting with the customers which can be pretty obnoxious when you are trying to enjoy yourself with friends. The other two chefs Katrina and Ken seem to know what they are doing. They are fast, helpful, and fun to chat with and you'll get better service if you sit in front of them because they will help out. But overall, I'll say that SN was a good experience

i am wanting to try and see for myself. although it doesn't sound like it's gotten good reviews. the best sushi in town? osaka (huguenot location -- even though they don't have a big menu of the fresh sushi) and sakura! hands down. having a friend who is from japan, she agrees, too!

I live about 2 blocks from SN, absolutely love sushi, and will most likely never visit this restaurant again. My boyfriend and I visited during the first week that it was open, and there were only about 4 other people in the whole restaurant. The sushi was amazing; we had yellowtail, spicy tuna, swordfish, and a specialty roll, along with miso soup and a few beers. The fish was wonderfully fresh and tasty. The miso was excellent with just the right amount of seaweed and tofu. Everything was delicious, although it did take a tad longer than should have. The bill was a bit expensive, but the freshness of the fish was worth it.
Now, to our second and third visits, of which we did not even get a chance to eat. The second time that we visited SN, the place was fairly crowded (maybe 6-8 small parties), although there were some open tables. We were seated fairly quickly and given menus, but were then ignored for almost half an hour. NO ONE came to take a drink order, bring water, even appologize for the wait. Our waiter looked at us several times and promptly walked on by. It was atrocious.
We decided to give it another try, since the food was so good the first time. This time, we (just two of us) arrived around 9:30 PM. The restaurant was not very busy and it was a Saturday evening. Most bars/restaurants in the fan stay open much later than that. We were told by the waiter that they were no longer serving dinner and basically refused service. We looked around at the other tables, many of whom had recently been seated, and he changed his mind and said we would have to wait until they "served every other table" before they could wait on us. Extremely rude and not appologetic at all.
Unfortunately, Sushi Ninja is a great sushi restaurant with terrible service. I eat out frequently and tip very well, but they will not be seeing any of my business anytime in the future.

This is the same review I wrote on another site, figure I don't have to rewrite it again.

I had the most horrendous sushi experience at sushi ninja. The head chef has absolutely no idea how to make sushi. The fish wasn't any fresher than other sushi restaurants around town and it was hacked up badly. The sushi rice is very important and they also manage to screw that up. The rice is over cooked, lack flavors of vinegar, kombu, and sugar. The chef didn't put any wasabi between the fish and the rice when making the nigiri. The reason you put wasabi between the fish and the rice to for adhering the fish to the rice and to add a layer of flavor but their nigiri fish was stuck on the rice because it was way over cook and sticky. Some of the fish tasted fishy as well like the tuna, it wasn't fresh. I would say the level of skills of the head chef is on par with Ukrops sushi booth. The sushi tasted like they bought couple books on how to make sushi and opened a restaurant because you can charge more on Japanese food. The whole experience was traumatizing.

If you guys want very good sushi/sashimi, go to umi sushi bistro. The chef actually knows how to prep fish and make sushi rice. Their soy sauce is also fixed by the chef. I would rate umis’ sushi on par with Morimotos’ sushi in NYC.

I took a party of 8 in the other night. We walked in and before half of the group could even get in the door some one barked at us "I'm gonna need reservations for eight". Granted 8 can be hard to accommodate but half the restaurant was empty and they didn't offer us any apologies or options, basically just refused to serve us. So we went down to Akida a smaller restaurant and spent our $200 there and had a great time. Akida continues to be the best Sushi in Richmond. The eight of us will not return and do not recommend SN to any of our friends.

Okay, so you guys were right...Limited menu... Couldn't tell if the fish was fresh...They sliced the sashimi like leaves, so it was wilted flesh. The wait staff was awful!!! This definitely was not authentic sushi, nor was it an Akida or Sticky.

I'm trying the place tonight! Hey, to those who like to put Sticky Rice in the same category, shame on you. It's not authentic Japanese. Nonetheless, Sticky is one of my Richmond FAVORITEs. Nor is Akida, if you ever understood that they speak Mandarin - they are Chinese, not Japanese. Thus, the Chinese-nuances in their cooked food. If you want authentic Japanese sushi Omakase style, you must pay! If it's good, it's worth it.

You know, guys.... I actually really enjoyed it when I went to Sushi Ninja. Granted, I was with friends, we were one of the only groups in the restaurant, and we were not in any hurry at all, but I thought the food was delicious and the service no better or worse than anywhere else you eat in the Fan.

I went to Sushi Ninja last Friday night. Upon arriving it took us 10 minutes to get drinks from a lady that wasn't even our waitress. Our waiter finally shows up to ask us how we were doing and he proceeded to walk away with out taking our order. (Mind you this is about 35 minutes after arriving). Upon taking our appetizer and dinner orders we did not see him again until our sushi was delievered 1.5 hours later. In the mean time, our salads were not made according to the menu and the miso soup was cold. The sushi was good but not worth waiting for. To make matters worse, we told our waiter that we'd like our check split. It took him 30 more minutes to do that and he came back completely confused and he had split the checks wrong. I do not recommend this place unless you want to leave hungry and mad. The wait staff is clueless and the sushi chefs have no concept of time. It was a horrible experience. We went across the street and got a real dinner after that. The total bill for me, which was a vegeterian roll, salad, and diet coke was $18.00 . Never again.

I went to Sushi ninja about a week ago and literally waited through 1.5 showings of "Enter the Dragon" on their projection T.V. before even getting my appetizer. The waiter was definitley conscience of our wait and kept offering up excuses such as "you cant rush good sushi" and "we dont sell sushi for a dollar." Compaired to Sticky Rice and Akida this place is not worth the price, the time, or the pretensciousness.

If you eat at this place, you might as well bring some food with you while you wait, because they move at a glacial pace! Although the food is well enough, I suppose, waiting an hour and a half between the appetizer and main sushi dishes is simply unacceptable at any price; not to mention that the wait staff was pathologically inept and seemed to be avoiding my wife and I like the plague. I don't care if they fly the fish in straight from Japan, it's no excuse to have to wait that long.

Follow up to my last comment - went there for dinner last night. The fish was really really awesome, but not any better than Akida (and double the price). Our dinner took almost 2 hours to arrive, and the table next to us had their dinner comped for taking even longer. The food itself was definitely very tasty, but the high prices and ridiculous wait did not even things out. The manager offered the excuse that when multiple tables order their "Chef's Choice Nigiri Platter", they get backed up - but since this is one of the only traditional sushi options and the best bet to split on a date, I have to imagine that backup will be happening often!

this sushi place is no way the best in richmond. i went there for dinner one night around 5:30 and i was one of the only tables in the restaurant and it took about two hours (no exaggerating) to get 3 sushi rolls. that is unacceptable, especially when you're paying that much for the food. stay away unless you want to waste your time and money

samantha- i am a charter boat capt.out of va. beach with 20 years on the job and i must tell you i have eaten at sushi ninja and i found the fish to be the finest i have seen in va.. before you go dogging something you must know about it!!! quality fish is going to be striated, sake never goes bad, and fish is never "veiny". if you are refering to the poss. visable lines of fat in some of the fish then that is a good thing. the more fat the better it is!!! it is good omega fatty acid in there so dont worry about your figure. its not their fault you cant afford their prices!
