There are a few things that the city of Richmond prides itself on. I would argue that near the top of that list is the fact that when you're here, you realize that you are indeed standing in the capital of the Confederacy.
Another is our art scene. Not only do numerous eclectic galleries line our streets providing an escape from repetitive weekends spent cruising the usual strip of bars but they make our city come alive.
And finally, most vividly important to Richmonders I would argue is our culinary flavor. Richmonders pride themselves on knowing the newest hot spot to enjoy a lavish dinner, or which new eatery in town has the tastiest and quickest lunches on the go.
But apparently this weekend, Richmond is only going be big enough for the city's ultimate top chef. And how are they going to battle it out? With a good ol' fashioned showdown of course.
This weekend, head down to 17th Street Farmers Market and prepare your palette for a "ten paces and draw" like Richmond has never seen before -- the first-ever Shockoe Chef Showdown, which will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 26.
Just like every Saturday, the Farmer's Market will open up at 9 a.m. with the Bohemian market, an eclectic mix of fresh-off-the-farm produce coupled with the highest quality handmade and homemade items as well as some vintage flair.
But starting at 11 a.m., the market will take on an entirely different atmosphere as the competition starts to heat up.
"We first met to share our idea of having some type of cook off with the Shockoe Bottom Neighborhood Association," said Denise Lawus, Economic Development Programs Administrator for the city of Richmond.
"We thought it was a great idea to gain exposure for both city restaurants and for the market."
From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., bystanders can participate in the Showdown by offering up willing palettes during the taste-testing portion of the competition. Too sweet? Too spicy? Too tart? Too tangy? Write it down and share your thoughts.
And participants, if you can't handle the criticism, you know what they say: "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen."
Thirteen chefs from some of Richmond's most beloved restaurants including LuLu's, Café Gutenberg, Aurora's and Kobe Japanese Steakhouse among others will step up to the plate in meat-based, vegetarian-based and dessert Chef Signature Dish competitions. And at $2 per serving, you can choose and consume at free will. Awards for each dish category will be given at 1 p.m.
Marketeers can also participate in a little showdown fun with the Fresh Market Basket competition. In Iron Chef-style fashion, contestants will be provided with a basket in which they must have a finished product consisting of all materials from the market itself, by 3 p.m. Awards for the basket competition will be given at 3:30 p.m.
Live music will be performed by three regional acts throughout the day and if you're getting excited and eager for more events to make their way to into the Bottom, you won't have to wait much longer.
"We've just developed a working relationship with the Shockoe Bottom Neighborhood Association, but we will have more upcoming events," Lawus said. "In October, we're going to host 'Shockoe on the Half Shell,' which will be an oyster festival."
All I can say to you, Richmond (and especially to your foodies) is have your palettes cleansed, your forks ready and appetites hearty -- the Bottom is about to burst open with flavor.
