October is a celebratory month.

It's Virginia Wine Month, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it's filled with fun and thrilling Halloween events and it's the prime time for Richmond's fall festivals.

But there's one October event that outdoes them all, year after year. It's Restaurant Week and it's just around the corner.

And who among us can resist a week-long charitable event when some of the hottest (and priciest) restaurants in town lower their prices and whip up a three course, pre-fixed sampler menu for the masses? And the best part is, it's all for a good cause.

For the wildly low price of $25.08 you get a delicious meal from a restaurant you've be dying to try and $2.08 of every purchase goes to The Central Virginia Food Bank to help feed less-fortunate Richmonders all year long.

Restaurant Week kicks off on Monday, Oct. 27 (it's a week late this year) and runs through Sunday, Nov. 2. Reservations are accepted at most places and, as anyone who's ever tried to get in without a reservation will tell you, it's not worth it to leave your table to chance.

And this year, like last year, exclusively from Richmond.com, we're bringing you as many menus as are available. Check back often as we'll update them as they come in.

Went to Hill Cafe. Homemade chips were excellent. Tomatoes and mozzarella were not that good. Meatloaf was the best I've ever had. Italian sausage and penne was good but nothing special. Desserts were both good.

I went to Sam Miller tonight. The hot cheese dip (though the menu states it is a hot crab dip) was good, just no crab. I had the Maine Selection which was 1/2 lobster with crab imperial and sea scallop. The portion size was great. The dinner was okay. I love crab imperial; but I hate shells and it was full of shell. The desserts were excellent. I had key lime pie.

So I went to Hard Shell last night. First the restaurant does note on the menu that the portions for the restaurant week menu are smaller than the standard restaurant menu portions. Smaller was an under-statement. The service was great and the food was okay. My she-crab soup was sprinkled with fine slivers of crab (not much) and extremely viscous. It was served in the small soup cup which was almost too small for the soup spoon. The salmon was dry and the portion was inadequate. I enjoyed my 3 asparagus spears and 1/4 cup of garlic mashed potatoes. I also enjoyed the small piece of key lime pie. My friend and I were both hungry afterwards and we are tiny people.

Went to Bistro 27 last night. Had to wait about 45+ minutes after our reservation time (good thing we made a reservation a week ago right??). Place was packed. Appetizers were good. Entrees were very good (salmon was perfectly cooked, but crab on top was sparse at best --- pork was tender, but still not sure why they provided what amounted to a butter knife as a cutting utensil). However, they ran out of mashed potatoes and served us lentils instead (without letting us know I might add) which were just ok and extremely salty. The mixed veggies were average at best.

Deserts were ok, nothing to write home about. One member of our table however got a non-thawed piece of cheesecake (it crumbled like a cake as you touched it with a fork - obviously not homemade). Chocolate tart wasn't bad, but packed with nuts which was not described. It gave it a "little debbie' brownie feel. Not impressed.

I have a feeling on non-restaurant week nights that the place is a completely different place. I would go back again, but definately nothing to write home about this week.

Julep's is closed tonight (Thursday) for a private party. Bummer!

We have been using restaurnat week for the last three years as an opportunity to try restaurants that are normally out of our price range. This year there were not many that were really a great deal price wise. Went to LaGrotta tnight and I do agree with the last comment totally.

Went to La Grotta last night - food was great, service was not. Our waiter totally ignored us after the salads were cleared. Another brought our dinner (great), but then no one came by again. The dinner rush had slowed considerably, and we watched as our waiter tended the rest of the section and reset tables. We were there an hour and a half at that point, had to get the dessert to go after finally waving down our waiter. Considering the week, it wouldn't have been a big deal if the waiter had seemed at all concerned that we had been neglected... haven't been to La Grotta for about 6 months, but not really in a hurry to return.

Went to La Grotta last night. Carpaccio and Caesar Salad were both excellent. We had the salmon and roasted pork loin. Both were good. Coconut cake was outstanding! Haven't been to La Grotta in several years, but we'll be back.

Will definitely be trying two of them. Have always wanted to be in ATL or NY for that time. I'll try here first, can't wait!
