For years if Richmonders needed a shot of Jack Daniels or a splash of Grey Goose on a Sunday for their homemade liquor concoctions, they were out of luck.
Until now.
During the regular General Assembly session this year, legislators approved a bill adding the cities of Richmond, Portsmouth, Hampton, Newport News and Chesapeake to the list of localities allowed by the Alcohol Beverage Control Board to sell liquor in ABC stores on Sundays starting from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
New laws go into effect Tuesday, July 1, which means all 10 of Richmond's ABC stores will be open July 6, according to Becky Gettings, director of public affairs with the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.
ABC stores will also be open during regular hours on Friday, July 4.
The previous law allows ABC stores to be open in any city or county with a population of 100,000 or more with ABC approval. Since 2004, ABC stores may be open, at the discretion of the ABC Board, in the counties of Fairfax, Arlington, Loudoun and Prince William, and in the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Manassas, Manassas Park, Norfolk and Virginia Beach.
According to the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, this change will increase revenues by $500,000 to $700,000 a year, and the money will be split evenly between the annual excise taxes and profits.
