Like shopping at Ukrop's? How about saving money on gas?

If so, you're really going to like a new plan unveiled today by Ukrop's and Uppy's.

Simply use your Ukrop's valued customer card at the grocery store and for every $50 you spend, you get 10 cents off each gallon of gas when you fill up at participating Uppy's convenience stores.

You don't have to spend $50 all at once. The money will accumulate on your customer card, and you can see how much you will save on your grocery receipt.

When you go to the Uppy's gas station, the pump will ask you to swipe your valued customer card if you have one and then immediately reduce the price on the pump in front of you. For example, if the price is $3.90 per gallon, and you've bought $100 in groceries using your customer card, you'll get 20 cents off your gas purchase.

You will literally see the price on the pump drop from $3.90 to $3.70 for your entire fueling purchase.

The program goes into effect Monday at 7 a.m. at 14 Richmond-area, Uppy's-run stores before expanding to 35 gas stations by the end of September. Though the Fuelperks points will expire after three months, the program itself will run indefinitely, according to the men behind the program,  Steven Uphoff and Bobby Ukrop.

"We believe Fuelperks will change the way Richmonders buy their fuel," Uphoff said. "It's about two local family businesses working together ... to save you money on the two things you buy the most: gas and groceries."

Uphoff said it's been a "technological nightmare" to update the pumps, but that it was worth it because of the instant gratification.

"There's no rebate," he said. "It's done instantly."

If two people in the same household both have a Ukrop's card, their purchases will be linked and the points will show up on both cards almost instantly, according to Ukrop.

Unfortunately, the key-chain sized Ukrop's cards won't work at the pumps so customers will also have to get a credit-card sized card. A table will be set up at each Ukrop's to help people register for the bigger card. You can still use your key-chain sized card at Ukrop's store and the points will automatically show up on the bigger card.

With Uppy's running more than 100 stores in the Richmond area, how do you know which ones are participating? Well right now, it's the stations closest to Ukrop's stores.

But you can find the stores by checking out three Web sites and plugging in your address:

So what if they give 20 cents off per gallon. Ukrops prices are higher than Kroger prices to start; so are uppys prices. No advantage there for Ukrops.

This is awsome!!! I don't really shop at Ukrops but for those who do this is a great idea! Give me something for shopping at your store. I use the Kroger card to get 3cents off which is ok but to get 10 cents off by spending 50 dollars that is great! Especially at expensive Ukrops one should be able to hit that fifty dollar mark just by buying evening dinner or lunch. Good way to get them Mr. Ukrops.

In response to Sue, the website was desigend by Madison+Main which is an advertising company (www.madisonandmain.net). The website was developed by Alynnlee Productions, Ltd. (www.alynnlee.com). Both companies are Richmond based. I am a developer with Alynnlee and personally created the Google search feature for the website.

Alison is right, you can save a lot more than 10 cents a gallon at a fill up. If you want to know how the program actually works try going to this website, www.richmondbargins.com/blog/ or www.10centsofgas.com, hopefully those sites will clear up any questions. Great program Ukrops!

The difference between this and Kroger (besides aforementioned $50 vs $100 and a few crowded Kroger stations) is that you can save MORE than 10 cents per gallon at a fillup. I believe Kroger limits you to 10 cents off at a fillup, no matter how many "rewards" you've accumulated. Not sure how Uppy's regular prices compare to Kroger.

Kroger saves you .10 per $100, Ukrop's saves you .10 per $50, so at Kroger you have to spend twice as much to get the same deal. Plus there's a lot more gas stations than just the crowded one at Kroger.

Kroger has been doing this for years now. Besides, 10 cents saving times 20 gallons per fillup saves you a whopping $2. Not enough to make anyone change shopping habits. Let me know when gas fall below $3 a gallon.

Doesn't this sound like an ad versus news? Kroger has been doing this at their stores for years now. This wouldn't make me want to shop at Ukrops or Uppys any more than normal-

what is wrong with making a profit? I am sure if Spengler owned a business, making a profit would probably on his list of things to do. Of coarse Ukrops and Uppy's hope this will encourage you to shop there, isn't that a fundamental goal of business owners. They are offering something very helpful to the community. It seems like a win/win situation. No need to be a hater.

hey spengler, sounds like you're against people trying to make money...I think it's a pretty cool program. C'mon you gotta buy groceries anyway, why not get a little money back from the gas you buy? website looks cool, www.10centsoffgas.com, anybody know who designed it? doesn't look like a Ukrops site.

once Ukrops learns to use RFID,we can use this like the exxon speedpass. come on!! i don't want to carry another large card..

Bobby Ukrop is quite the opposite of what he portrays. He only cares about money, not trying to help people out (why the Ukrop's on Harrison St. closed). This isn't a plan to help consumers; it's a plan to draw more people to Ukrop's and in turn make more money for the company, of which almost none of the employees see. Though I commend him for offering relief from high energy prices, it's no doubt an effort to boost sales and make money for himself and those who profit on the sale at the markets. Not us.
