At least once in our lives we will all be, or know someone who has been, affected by the devastating disease known as cancer. And, if we're lucky, we'll also be fortunate enough to meet one of the strongest, most determined and appreciative people in the world.

A cancer survivor.

In celebration of this survivorship, their courage and the hope for a cure, the Bon Secours Cancer Institute will host the 3rd annual Cure by Design: The Fabric of Life from 7 to 11 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 15 at Toad's Place.

Proceeds from tickets and the auction will go to benefit the American Cancer Society.

Fashion and design retailers from the Richmond-area will join forces with the corporate community on Friday night for a runway extravaganza. A VIP reception will kick off the night at 6 p.m. with the Survivor Fashion Show beginning at 7 p.m.

Designers Alex Garfield and Michael Taylor will be contributing to the show through their appreciation of fashion and women.

Garfield, a native of New York City, is not only one of the original founders of Cure by Design, but is also highly committed to the program "Dress for Success," the international non-profit dedicated to providing interview suits and business attire for low-income women in over 75 cities worldwide.

Each year, the American Cancer Society and the Richmond Chapter of the American Institute of Architects join together in a competition for the design of the runway. This year's winner was Michael Gibson of BCWH Architects with his design inspired by the flower, the Calla Lily.

"The Calla Lily symbolizes rebirth and in ancient Roman times, it was considered the flower of light because it blooms during the time that is darkest, during winter solstice," Gibson said of his design on curebydesign.org.

"The symbolic nature of this flower lends a strong connection to the 'Fabric of Life' for those who have lived through dark times and were able to re-bloom."

After these stylish survivors of all ages, shapes and sizes strut their stuff down the runway, a reception and silent auction will take place with the chance to walk away with a number of fabulous prizes. The prizes include a tour of the Today Show including a meet and greet with Tiki Barber, a Charlottesville getaway, a consultation and custom garment from designer Michael Taylor and much more.

Tickets for Cure by Design are $125 per person and include admission to the Fashion Show and reception. Tickets may be purchased for 10 attendees for access to all of the above, as well as the VIP reception, for $1,500. Tickets may be purchased at NYFO Boutique or any HandCraft Cleaners.
