The ninth annual Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10k topped the 10,000-mark on Thursday in total entries received, meaning the event is now more than one-third of the way toward its entry limit less than one month after registration opened. The 10k, which will be held on April 5, will accept 30,000 entries.

The brisk entry rate has been helped by the popularity of the YMCA 10k Training Team. More than 2,400 runners and walkers have signed up for the 10-week program, which will get under way on Saturday at YMCAs around the region. Registration for the training team program closes Feb. 1.

The training program costs $50 to register and includes 10-week training program with a detailed written schedule; guidance from experienced coaches; organized weekly group runs/walks on Saturday mornings; a special YMCA 10k Training Team T-shirt; and entry in the Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10k.

The registration fee for the Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10k is $25 through Thursday, Jan. 31. The First Market Mile Kids Run costs $10 through Jan. 31. The fee for both events increases $5 beginning Feb. 1.

Registration is available at www.sportsbackers.org. Anyone wishing to mail in their registration for either event may download an entry form off the Web site or pick one up at any Ukrop's store.
