In what part of the metro area do you live? North Side

Best business decision: “Expanding Boho. Expansion is always risky, but classes at our first cycle studio were packed and had long wait lists. The second cycle studio has been a huge success, and now we have ventured into a new way of promoting fitness.”

Worst business decision: “Not communicating with the team often enough or clearly enough. I used to think I should wait to communicate until I had every answer to every possible question. But that left long stretches where nothing got said, so the team thought I was hiding something or cutting them out. The whole dynamic changed the first time I said, ‘Here’s a problem I’m working on, and I don’t know the answer yet.’ Suddenly I had a small army to help me work it out.”

Mistake you learned the most from: “I waited two years after opening Boho before I taught my first cycle class. I had hired instructors so I could focus on running the business. But when an instructor got sick I had to jump in — and I learned so much about what customers were experiencing. I should have done it from the beginning.”

What is the biggest challenge/opportunity in the next two to five years: “Managing growth as fitness trends evolve and the economy remains uncertain. How will that affect my customers’ disposable income? Whatever happens, Boho is all about helping people move more and live healthier lives.”

First job after college: Catering representative at Hyatt Regency Chicago. “I planned events for 10 to 4,000 people throughout Chicago. It taught me to plan, organize, manage and execute — all the skills to run a small business.”

If you had to do it all over again, what would you do differently: “I hired a business consultant to help plan Boho when we first opened. The plan we got was too generic, and it forecasted dollars wrong and proposed processes that didn’t work. I wouldn’t do that again.”

Book that inspired you the most, and why?: “The Power of Small.” “The long term is just a bunch of short terms in a row. Get the small things right, and the big things will take care of themselves.”

Favorite/least favorite subject in school: “I do not have a mind for science, but I loved history — especially learning about women using code to message troops in battle overseas.”
