Financial Opportunity Center

A ribbon cutting was held for the new Financial Opportunity Center that opened in South Richmond.

A new Financial Opportunity Center has opened in South Richmond to provide career coaching and other services that support financial stability among low-income and moderate-income families.

Virginia Local Initiatives Support Corp., or LISC, a nonprofit based in Richmond, opened the center in partnership with Southside Community Development and Housing Corp., and supported by grants of $200,000 each from the SunTrust Foundation and Henrico County-based Altria Group Inc.

Located at the Southside Community Development and Housing Corp.’s offices at 1624 Hull St., the center offers one-on-one coaching in adult financial education along with employment and career services.

The new center is the fourth Financial Opportunity Center operated by LISC in the Richmond region and the first to have two bilingual coaches to serve the region’s growing Latino population, which is expected to reach more than 111,000 people by 2020.

The three other Financial Opportunity Centers are at the Neighborhood Resource Center of Greater Fulton in Richmond’s East End; HumanKind’s Richmond location on North Side; and Pathways in Petersburg. They served 445 clients in 2018.

The grants from the SunTrust Foundation and Altria will support the new center for the first two years of its operations.
