The proposed Whole Foods Market-anchored Sauer Center development on West Broad Street near the Fan District received conditional approval from the Richmond Planning and Development Review office.

The development, at 2022 and 2024 W. Broad St., is on a site that now includes a former Pleasants Hardware building and is adjacent to the C.F. Sauer Co. headquarters on West Broad Street at Hermitage Road.

The approval letter is dated June 14.

The planning department also requested that the project go before the city’s Urban Design Committee for review of its streetscape plan, though approval by that committee will not affect the final approval or the developer’s ability to get construction permits.

Officials from Sauer Properties Inc., the development subsidiary of Richmond-based global food manufacturer C.F. Sauer Co., and Whole Foods Market did not return requests for comment.

Mega online retailer Amazon recently announced it was acquiring Whole Foods Market for $13.7 billion.
