The bottom line is never the focus at Hourigan, a construction and development firm based in Richmond with offices in Charlottesville and Virginia Beach.
“It’s never about revenue,” said Mark J. Hourigan, founder and CEO. “It’s about the relationship and having satisfied customers. That’s always the most important thing.”
That, along with creating a top-notch team, he said.
“Our big focus is growing our people,” he said. “We attract the right talent, get them in the door and help them grow professionally and personally.”
One of the largest commercial general contractors in the Richmond area serving the Mid-Atlantic region, the company employs about 200 employees, including 132 people in this area.
Each year, it brings in revenue of about $400 million and builds 35 to 40 projects, including office buildings, retail centers, call centers, schools, hospitals and health care sites, and industrial facilities.
The company has built more than 50 corporate offices and headquarters, each completed on a fast-track schedule and tight budget, and it is known for taking on some of the region’s highest profile and most complex construction projects.
“We’re very fortunate to keep growing our client base,” Hourigan said.
Current projects include Dominion Energy’s skyscraper in Richmond; an adult outpatient facility for Virginia Commonwealth University Health System, also in the heart of downtown; and a rehabilitation hospital that is a joint venture between VCU Health and Sheltering Arms under construction in Goochland County, just west of Short Pump.
“When faced with a complex project that others might find daunting, our team’s battle cry is ‘bring it on,’” according to information supplied for the Top Workplaces Award.
The company was ranked No. 1 in the midsize category for companies with 125 to 399 employees.

Hourigan said his company helps employees with career development through a robust performance management program.
“We want to keep building the next generation of leaders,” he said.
“In any business, but especially our business, our greatest asset is our people. The more you can invest in them, the better the company can do.”
Unlike many companies that share rising medical costs with employees, the general contractor pays the full cost of medical and dental plans for employees.
“That is one area that I know is near and dear to our people,” Hourigan said. “It affects them and their families greatly. ... We see this as an important way for us to give back.”
The company offers three weeks of paid time off for all employees and 11 paid holidays, including four-day weekends for Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Labor Day.
“We work hard in our industry — long hours, long days; some work weekends,” Hourigan said. “Giving that extra day so people can have a four-day weekend is very popular. People just love it. They feel like they are getting real break.”
Hourigan said turnover is minimal. “People are with us for long periods of time,” including some who have been with the company since it was started in 1993.
Older people with experience are mentors for young employees, who bring technology expertise to the table. “It’s a great tag team,” Hourigan said.
“With the young people, it’s all about technology. When they work with older employees, they see the value of interaction.”
Employees at all levels are given the leeway to make decisions.
“We want all our people be empowered to make great decisions,” Hourigan said.
“They don’t need to wait to be supported by senior management. So far, so good — 99 out of 100 times, it will be the right decision. It’s always better not to let problems linger.”
