For the third year in a row, Goochland County-based CarMax Inc. has been named one of the Richmond area’s best places to work.

The used-car retailer took home the first-place prize among organizations with more than 1,000 employees in the annual Sterling Workplace Awards for 2016.

The awards were given Thursday night during an event at the University of Richmond.

Other first-place finishers in their respective categories were wireless provider T-Mobile; real estate firm Joyner Fine Properties; and mental health counseling provider Commonwealth Counseling.

The four top winners emerged from among 60 private, public, nonprofit and government employers in the region, based on confidential surveys of their employees.

CarMax took first place for the third year running because of “dedicated and committed” employees, said Kim Ross, CarMax’s assistant vice president of human resources.

“It is no one person’s endeavor,” she said. “We are really fortunate to have a great group of people. Great groups of people breed enthusiasm that attracts more people.”

CarMax, which has 1,347 local employees and about 18,000 nationwide, won the top award in the mega company category — for businesses with more than 1,000 employees.

In addition to the benefits it provides for employees such as tuition assistance and flexible scheduling, the company was recognized for its recent commitment to give $1.4 million over three years to organizations supporting military families.

T-Mobile, the nation’s fourth-largest wireless provider, placed first in the large company category for organizations with 400 to 999 local employees.

In the employee surveys, T-Mobile staffers lauded the company for its workplace camaraderie and benefits such as child care subsidies. T-Mobile has 838 employees in the Richmond area.

“The Richmond call center has been the top-performing call center for T-Mobile for two years in a row,” said Aileen Thomas, associate director of customer care at T-Mobile’s call center in Henrico County.

“We believe if we take care of our front line, they will take care of our customers,” Thomas said in accepting the award. “We listen to our employees and make sure that we have fun and work hard.”

Real estate firm Joyner Fine Properties won the top workplace in the midsize company category for businesses with 125 to 399 local workers.

Employees said in the survey that they appreciated the sense of support and camaraderie provided by the company, which has been in business since 1973 and has 183 local employees.

Commonwealth Counseling placed first in the small company category, for businesses with 124 employees or fewer.

Staff members said Commonwealth Counseling provides the support needed for professionals who work in the difficult field of helping people with serious emotional and behavioral needs.

James Bullock, executive director of Commonwealth Counseling, thanked the company’s 58 local staff members.

“This is a group of people that have embraced, in my mind, the idea that we work with and for one another with a singular goal — helping our patients with their health care, their general welfare and to grow as human beings,” said Bullock, a clinical psychologist.

Bullock said he believes he has the best job in the world. “That is because part of my job is to help everyone at Commonwealth Counseling have the best job in the world,” he said.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch partnered with Richmond SHRM, a chapter of the National Society for Human Resource Management, to present the awards.

The awards were based on confidential employee surveys conducted by Workplace Dynamics, a Pennsylvania-based employee research firm. The surveys asked employees their opinions about their workplaces, including pay and benefits, the ethics of the organization, and their sense of engagement with their employer.
