Kool and the Gang rescheduled their New Year’s Eve show to the summer, which means it’s time to “Celebrate good times; come on!” (of course). Chesterfield County Fair

Starts Friday, Aug. 24

Get ready for midway rides, games, live music, animals, exhibits, rodeo, fair food and lots more at the Chesterfield County Fair, 5-11 p.m. Monday-Friday, 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Saturday and 1-11 p.m. Sunday at Chesterfield Fairgrounds, 10300 Courthouse Road. $5-$10; 3 and younger free; rides extra. If you’ve been waiting for a good time to visit the Science Museum of Virginia, PrepareAthon is it. This free festival offers information and hands-on activities relating to emergency preparedness, extreme weather events, sustainability, plus free museum admission. Circle the Wagons BBQ Cook-off & Concert


Dig into finger-lickin’ good barbecue at Center of the Universe Brewing where five barbecue vendors, including Saucy’s BBQ and Grandpa Eddie’s, will compete for “best BBQ” and “best side.” With music from the Commonwealth Bluegrass Band and Undercover Bandwagon, an amateur barbecue sauce competition, plus games and face-painting for kids, and plenty of COTU beer, including a special release. Latin Jazz & Salsa Festival


Put some salsa in your step with the Latin Jazz & Salsa Festival at Dogwood Dell. With saucy performances by Van Lester, Johnny Love, Wanda Lopez, Adrian Garcia’s Latin Jazz Quintet and others, hosted by “Sweet Lou” Hidalgo, 3-8 p.m. at Dogwood Dell, Byrd Park. Free. (804) 646-3355.
