Ellwood Thompson’s Café is closing its location inside the Institute for Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University.

The cafe will close at the end of June.

“This was a difficult decision to make,” Ellwood Thompson’s Local Market owner Rick Hood wrote in a statement.

“We opened the café in April 2018 when the ICA first opened its doors. The Ellwood’s team has enjoyed the partnership with the ICA and its staff. We are grateful for the opportunity and wish the ICA the best in the future.”

According to a statement from the Richmond-based grocery store, “the café was not financially sustainable.”

“We are sad to see them go, but we understand they need to make decisions that are best for their business,” said Lesley Bruno, ICA communications manager.

Bruno said the ICA is initiating the request for proposal process to bring in a new cafe operator. They hope to have a new cafe operator in place by the end of summer.

The $41 million building, which covers 41,000 square feet, is at 601 W. Broad St., at the corner of Belvidere and Broad streets.
