It's hard not to love a restaurant that puts just as much thought into their patio as their interior and that's exactly what the folks behind the newly opened Kreggers at Hand in the Fan District did.
Kreggers at Hand opened Tuesday and the shining star is the side patio, which features a gas burning table fireplace, a massive umbrella (with heaters on the way), its own bar, and custom tables and chairs.
The restaurant is an approachable New American restaurant from Craig and Vanessa Eberle, a husband and wife team who opened the first Kreggers - Kreggers Tap and Table at 9523 Kings Charter Dr. - in Ashland in 2015.
Craig, who spent most of his career in corporate restaurant management, said they pair had been looking for a spot to open the second location of the "gastro pub featuring an eclectic mix of new American fare" when some friends found the building at 2614 W. Cary St.
"I fell in love with it," Craig said. "I knew this needed to be the second location."
Outside, the building features a mural over three walls, which was completed in 2016 by N.C.-based artist Taylor White as part of the Richmond Mural Project. Inside, the building was completed deteriorated when Craig took it over in July 2017.
Craig said they spent over a year restoring the interior and building the kitchen and bar, which are featured on a second level inside overlooking a main level dining room. Vanessa took the lead on the design, which features reclaimed wood tables, mixes of metal and fabric, funky colors and of course TVs, a requirement for all of their restaurants as it's a requirement their son, who is an offensive lineman at Florida State University.
Family is important to the Eberles. One of their daughters is a regular behind the bar and another created the restaurant's tagline: "grab life by the beer." Kreggers' motto is a phrase Craig has spent his lifetime promising his wife, “Every day’s a holiday, and every night’s a honeymoon.”
Craig and Vanessa show off their Texas roots on the menu, which is the same as the Ashland location: prime rib tacos and brisket tacos (plus other varieties), Texas wings, Texas-style BBQ and steak. Other menu items include burgers, sandwiches, bowls, jerk chicken and entree salads. Most menu items are priced in the low-teens and there are usually discounted specials during the week, such as $7 steak night on Mondays. Brunch is served Saturday and Sunday and features a Bloody Mary Bar. Happy hour is offered seven-days a week.
Kreggers at Hand is between Mullberry and Robinson on Cary Street at 2614 W. Cary St., (804) 918-1572, and is open Monday - Wednesday, 11 a.m. - midnight; Thursday and Friday, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. - 2 a.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. - midnight.
