Richmond's own Mama J's Kitchen just got a little more praise from the national food community.
Food & Wine magazine named the Jackson Ward restaurant one of "19 great restaurants to work for" - just a few weeks after Mama J's was named a James Beard Foundation semifinalist is the outstanding service category.
The magazine set out to find restaurants going above and beyond for its employees as part of its annual search to highlight restaurateurs making traditionally lower-wage work better, according to the piece.
Mama J's earned a spot on the list for its commitment to promote from within wherever possible - and for giving annual raises.
"[Velma Johnson] and her son—and business partner—Lester Johnson ended up with a booming restaurant, and they made it one where sexual harassment results in termination, standard policy is to train lower-wage hires into better-paid positions, and wages go up every year," Food & Wine wrote.
