Stella’s Grocery — the gourmet market from Richmond restaurateurs Katrina and Johnny Giavos — is opening its fourth Richmond location in The Hill Standard shopping center at 4910-4930 Forest Hill Ave., which is under construction.
“It’ll be a similar concept to our Scott’s Addition location, with made-to-order foods, prepared foods, etc.,” said Dean Giavos, Katrina and Johnny’s son, who is the spokesman for the family businesses. “We’ve been looking for more space for our bakers and are excited to be there for the neighborhood.”
The first Stella’s Grocery opened in 2015 at 1007 Lafayette St. A location at 3351 Moore St. in Scott’s Addition followed and last year, the family rebranded its Kohlmann’s Neighborhood Market at 109 E. Grace St. in downtown Richmond as Stella’s.
The first location in the Near West End is across the street from the family’s upscale Greek restaurant, Stella’s, and was originally established to get Stella, Katrina Giavos’ mom and the restaurant’s namesake, more kitchen space.
The market serves items from Stella’s restaurant menu as well as gourmet Greek products, baked goods, beer, wine, gifts and more.
Since its opening four years ago, the gourmet market has established itself as a market and neighborhood cafe where prepared and made-to-order foods, plus items from the coffee and juice bars, can be enjoyed in cafe seating.
The Forest Hill location will also offer outdoor seating.
This isn’t the Giavoses’ first foray into South Richmond. The Giavoses, along with business partners Chris DiLauro and Manny Mendez, also own Little Nickel restaurant at 4702 Forest Hill Ave. and both Galley restaurant and Galley Market in the Stratford Hills Shopping Center at 6780 Forest Hill Ave.
Stella’s Grocery is the latest — and second-to-last — tenant announced for what’s been informally called The Veil Brewing Co. development, but what is officially called The Hill Standard, an homage to both the Standard Drug that once sat on part of the site and the “Hill” of the various surrounding neighborhoods (Westover Hills, Forest Hill, Stratford Hills).
The Hill Standard has been in the works near the corner of Forest Hill Avenue and Westover Hills Boulevard for just over a year. In April 2018, Summit Partners LLC announced it was bringing a small-batch brewery and tasting room for The Veil Brewing Co., plus apartments and other retail operations, to a 1.3-acre site at 4910-4930 Forest Hill Ave.
Very few details have been shared about the project since the initial announcement.
In addition to The Veil Brewing, Blanchard’s Coffee Roasting Co. and Charm School ice cream shop have confirmed they’re opening locations in the space.
Charm School Study Hall, the name of the Forest Hill location, “will be a soft serve-centered shop in Forest Hill,” according to a news release. “The shop will include late-night service, a walk-up window, a record player inside and off-street parking.”
Construction began roughly a year after the initial announcement and The Veil shared that the site would include two buildings, one dedicated to The Veil, which will also serve beer and wine on-site, plus an in-house Pepe’s Mexican Restaurant. The second building will feature 16 apartments on two levels plus first-floor retail, which will house Stella’s Grocery, Blanchard’s, Charm School and a not-yet-named fitness studio.
The development is expected to open next year.
