Last year, the Phifers on Asbury Court won $50,000 on ABC’s “The Great Christmas Light Fight.”

This year, they’ll return to the Tacky Lights List with both of their western Henrico County houses lit up and decorated for the holidays. The doll room will also be back with new holiday dolls and figures donated by a fan.

The Phifers have been decorating for over 40 years. Bobby started on his mother’s house, then bought the house next door and started decorating that one, too. Together, the houses have close to 1.5 million lights.

Matriarch Rose Phifer died last year, but the Phifers are renting out her home. As long as they can keep the house in the family, Bobby said, they will continue to light up both residences.

As for the prize money, the Phifers used it to pay off several medical bills and to buy a new minivan for the two grandkids they’re taking care of full time. “We had hoped to buy a new roof,” Bobby said, “but the grandbabies come first.”

The Phifer home is one of the best-known tacky-lights houses in the area. Just follow the trail of buses and limos which have been visiting the Phifer home for 40 years for Tacky Lights.
