Virginia State Police this morning identified a Pennsylvania man killed Saturday while trying to retrieve fallen luggage on Interstate 295 in Henrico County.

Jeremy M. Steen, 30, of Mechanicsburg, Pa., was killed in an incident that took place about 4:20 p.m. on southbound I-295 on the Varina Road overpass, just north of the Varina-Enon Bridge.

Steen was one of three people who had gotten out of a vehicle parked on the right shoulder to retrieve luggage, state police said. A fourth person remained in the car.

A car driven by Trudy Lynn Williams, 29, of Hopewell ran off the right side of the road and struck both men and then the stopped vehicle, ejecting a woman inside the vehicle.

Steen was pronounced dead on the scene.

Williams and the woman thrown from the vehicle were taken to VCU Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. The two other people also were hospitalized with injuries described as not life-threatening.

Williams was charged with reckless driving.
