Dorothy McNamara Hough, 76, of Powhatan, died on Sunday, July 16, 2017. She is survived by her husband, Bill R. Hough; son, William R. Hough, Jr. (Susan); sister, Margaret Snider; and three grandchildren, Samantha, Brody and Bryan. Memorial services were held at 1 p.m. on Monday, July 24 in the Virginia Veterans Cemetery, Amelia.


Michael A. “Creeper” Kerns, 25, of Powhatan, passed away doing what he loved on Saturday, July 22, 2017. He is survived by his mother, Donna (Bryan) Smith of Richmond; father, Jimmy (Amy) Kerns of Powhatan; brother, Chris Kerns (Kristina) of Midlothian; nephew, Baylor; maternal grandmother, Carol (Jesse) Romer of Richmond; paternal grandmother, Doris “Nanny” Kerns of Powhatan; paternal grandfather, Barry “Pappy” Kerns of Richmond; stepgrandmother, Mary Francisco of Deltaville; uncle, Tommy (Heather) Kerns of Moseley; aunt, Beth (Scott) Jordan of Appomattox; stepbrothers, Barry, Stephen, Scott; stepsister, Toni; and his second parents, Jacques and Lisa Gits of Powhatan. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 25 at Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Highway, Powhatan and where services will be held at 11 a.m. today, July 26. Melissa Faye Mckinney, 47, of Powhatan, passed away on Wednesday, July 19, 2017, after a brief illness. Beyond a long, successful career, Melissa was best known as a devoted wife and mother. She is joined in death with her father, Leroy Shue; grandmother, Myrtle Shue; grandfather, Carl Shue; stepfather, Tom Hall; aunt, Judy Arabia; and cousin, Robbie Shue. Melissa is survived by her husband, Chad; son, Nick; and daughter, Abigail. She is also survived by her mother, Jennifer Hall, and three brothers, David, Ricky and Robert Shue. A Celebration of Life service was held at 7 p.m. on Monday, July 24, at Woody Funeral Home-Parham, 1771 N. Parham Rd., Richmond. Interment will be in Parsons, Kansas. Nita Anderson Porterfield, 80, of Powhatan, passed away on Thursday, July 13, 2017. She was preceded in death by her husband, Emmitt; and her son, David. She is survived by her daughter, Linda Porterfield; son, Douglas Porterfield, both of Powhatan; sister, Betty A. Foster of Farmville; three grandchildren, Paige Miller (Zach), Dustin Porterfield (Becca), Adam Porterfield; and two great-grandchildren. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 21 at Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Highway, Powhatan. Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 22 at May Memorial Baptist Church, Powhatan. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Powhatan Animal Shelter.
