Brendan Pfab

Powhatan senior Brendan Pfab returns the ball on the forehand in a boys' singles Region 4B tournament match against Patrick Henry's Blake Boschen at Hanover High School on May 20.

MECHANICSVILLE – Brendan Pfab fended off a strong 3-game surge from Patrick Henry’s Blake Boschen to win his quarterfinals round in the Region 4B boys tennis singles tournament on sets of 6-2 and 6-4 and advance to the tournament semifinals, in which he’ll face Hanover’s Ross Violi, the number-one seed.

With a wide reach on his forehand, Pfab throughout the match hammered shot after shot, sometimes taking a brief hop into the air when slamming the returns all the way to Boschen's baseline and corners. One of Pfab’s forehand winners followed multiple returns on Boschen's strong overheads; Boschen was quick to the ball, but some of Pfab's shots had enough velocity to send the ball skipping past Boschen's agile dashes for the attempted receive.

Pfab won the first set on one of his quick blocks at the net to angle the ball away from his opponent. His hustle and timely plays at the net matched his powerful defense at the baseline.

In the Region 4B doubles tournament, Pfab and Mary Baldwin commit Connor Lindhjem battled Patrick Henry’s Boschen and Holt Oley through 3 sets, but Boschen and Oley ultimately won 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 to advance to the semifinals.
