The Richmond City Council’s finance committee delayed action Thursday on plans to create a dedicated source of funding for the city’s school system.

Councilman Jon Baliles, who is running for mayor, proposed a variety of approaches to dedicate a portion of tax revenue to the school system.

He said the goal is to provide school administrators a predictable source of funding and that cities around the state have adopted a similar system.

Members of the committee, however, said it was too soon to act on such a proposal and instead suggested that such a proposal should be agreed upon by school and city leaders before the council takes action.

“At the present time, I personally feel to bring this discussion up … is premature without any credence of whether it’s realistic and nothing more than another good idea,” said Councilwoman Ellen Robertson.
