A former Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps instructor at Patrick Henry High School in Hanover County was found not guilty this week on four charges that accused him of taking indecent liberties with a student at the school.
Jurors deliberated about three hours Wednesday before acquitting Walter R. Summerfield, 46, of four felony counts of taking indecent liberties while serving in a custodial role, said his defense attorney, Peter Baruch.
The charges involved a female student who accused Summerfield of having an ongoing intimate and sexual relationship with her, Baruch said. The defense attorney said the offenses were alleged to have occurred at the school last year when she was 15 and 16 years old.
The defense attorney said his client denies the accusations.
“It didn’t happen,” said Baruch, adding that there was no physical evidence to support the allegations.
The defense attorney said the former ROTC instructor lost his job after the charges were brought.
Baruch said Summerfield, a 26-year Navy veteran, is relieved by the outcome of the trial.
