A man identified only as a 37-year-old Hopewell resident was the victim of an accidental drowning at Chickahominy Lake on Saturday.

The New Kent County Sheriff’s Office said the victim was on a boat with his family and friends when he entered the water and went swimming with others, but was unable to make it back to the boat. Family members tried to reach him but were unable to do so.

The emergency communications center received the call shortly before 4 p.m. Saturday.

A search began at approximately 4:10 p.m. involving New Kent Fire-Rescue, West Point fire and rescue, James City fire and rescue, the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, the Virginia State Police’s med flight helicopter and the New Kent County Sheriff’s Office.

On Sunday the agencies involved were New Kent Fire-Rescue, West Point fire and rescue , James City Fire Department , the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries , the Virginia State Police dive team and the New Kent County Sheriff’s Office.

The victim was recovered at approximately 10:10 a.m. Sunday and was transported to the state’s chief medical examiner’s office in Richmond. Additional information may be provided once the medical examiner’s office completes its portion of the investigation.
