The driver of a vehicle that struck and killed a pedestrian in Colonial Heights on Saturday has been charged with DUI, authorities said.

Police were called to the area of Boulevard and Birch Avenue at 9:30 p.m. for the crash. EMS personnel arrived a short time later and determined the pedestrian was dead.

The victim was taken to the state medical examiner’s office in Richmond.

The driver, Shane Erick Dent, 34, of the 1500 block of Hardwood Court in Midlothian, was taken into custody at the scene of the crash and is accused of driving under the influence of alcohol, authorities said.

Dent was processed and released on an unsecured bond with a court appearance set for July 15 in Colonial Heights General District Court. Police said additional charges may be pending.

The name of the victim is being withheld until relatives can be notified.
