Three people were killed while standing alongside state Route 288 in Goochland County on Wednesday night after one of them had struck a deer while driving, Virginia State Police said.

The victims were identified as Linli Xu, 25, of Midlothian; Justin C. Ransone, 41, also of Midlothian; and Amy Lee Abbott, 45, of Glen Allen.

Police responded at 9:02 p.m. to the crash at southbound Route 288 and West Creek Parkway. According to the preliminary investigation, a 2015 Mercedes CLA 250 that Xu had been driving was disabled in the left lane after hitting a deer.

A 2006 Chevrolet Suburban occupied by Ransone and Abbott pulled over on the right shoulder of the highway, and the two went over to help Xu, police said.

A 2016 Audi Q5 — driven by Claire C. Carr, 53, of North Chesterfield — was traveling south and came upon the disabled Mercedes. In an attempt to avoid striking the vehicle, Carr veered to the left and struck Xu, Ransone and Abbott, all of whom were standing to the left of the Mercedes, police said.

The three died at the scene; Carr declined medical attention.

State police said charges were pending and that the crash remained under investigation.
