An apparent water main break has shut down the intersection of Franklin and 5th streets in downtown Richmond.

Police responded to a call about the water flooding the street at 8:34 a.m. on Thursday.

Officers have closed streets for a block in every direction.

Water was gushing from a hole in the middle of the intersection, causing asphalt to break away and the road to buckle under one of the crosswalks.

The flow of water has been stopped, but the roads remain closed.
