Ambulance lights

An 82-year-old man visiting the Outer Banks from West Virginia was hit by a pickup truck and killed while crossing U.S. 158 in Kill Devil Hills, N.C. on Monday.

Police said officers responded at 9:04 a.m. to the intersection of U.S. 158 and Landing Drive, which is near a Lowe's hardware store and the Kitty Hawk Airport. Investigators said a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado driven by a Point Harbor man, 90, was turning onto U.S. 158 from Landing Drive when it struck the victim.

Police said the pedestrian was in a crosswalk and had the right of way. A friend tried to pull the victim out of the vehicle's path.

Names are being withheld until the next of kin are notified.

The highway was shut down for approximately an hour during the investigation.
