Hanover County has tapped a familiar face to lead Patrick Henry High School.

The Hanover County School Board appointed Christopher Martinez, the school’s current assistant principal, as the school’s principal during its Tuesday night meeting. Martinez will start in the post on Jan. 1, 2019.

The board removed former principal Beth Smith in August. It did not give a reason for her removal.

Paul Cash, a former teacher and former assistant principal, will continue as the school’s interim principal until Martinez begins, the school district said.

Martinez started as a math teacher at Highland Springs High School in Henrico County. He’s been with Hanover County Public Schools since 2008.

He’s served in a variety of roles for the district, including teacher and sports coach. The Virginia Commonwealth University alumnus is also the chairman of the county’s Profile of a Hanover Graduate Committee.
