Hope Miles checks out what Sean Tyler of Feed More is delivering to Charles City Elementary School for the meal program of the Summer Camp of Charles City County Parks and Recreation.

Fewer than 1 in 6 Virginia students who rely on free or reduced school meals during the school year receive free meals through summer programs.

Richmond-area school systems and organizations are working to change that.

The percentage of students who qualify for free or reduced-price meals in the Richmond area is higher than the state average, according to data from the Virginia Department of Education, with 1 in 2 kids meeting the federal standards compared with 45% across the state.

Those students get the free or cheaper meals during the school year as part of their everyday school attendance. Some even receive backpacks stocked with food for the weekend.

When the school year finishes, though, they don’t automatically get that food and only 15% of eligible state students get the meals, according to No Kid Hungry, a national organization aimed at ending childhood hunger.

“As soon as that ends, they’re in a tough place,” said Doug Pick, CEO of the hunger relief agency Feed More. “They have numerous days without a meal and we feel it’s essential to fill that gap.”

The Richmond-based nonprofit partners with about 50 sites across the region to give students ages 18 and younger a free meal. The meals are open to all students.

Here is a list of school or community-based sites in Richmond and the counties of Chesterfield, Hanover and Henrico. Feed More’s list of all sites can be found here.
