COTMAN, Joan M., 77, of Richmond, departed this life on July 17, 2019. She is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Robert Cotman Sr.; one son, Robert Cotman Jr. (Deshea); brother, Desmoines Dennis; a host of grandchildren; a devoted niece and nephew, Joyce and Jerry Cooper; special friends whom she loved like sisters, Nancy Crump and Brenda Johnson; and a host of other relatives and friends. EDWARDS, Hoen McGuire "Mac" Jr., age 80, a resident of Zuni, died Wednesday, July 17, 2019. Born on January 23, 1939, on the family farm in Southampton County, Mac was the son of the late Hoen McGuire Edwards Sr. and Jessie Louise Doughtie Edwards. Mac graduated in 1961 as a proud member of the VPI Cadet Corps. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and the Virginia Army National Guard, was a member of the Franklin Baptist Church and had formerly been a member of Tucker Swamp Baptist Church and a member of the Southampton Historical Society. He was a retired farmer who for many years operated Blackwater Farms in Unity. Mac gave many years of faithful service to the Masonic Order as a member and past master of Courtland Lodge #85, A.F.&A.M. and was a member of Purdie Lodge #170, A.F.&A.M., Windsor. He was a 32nd degree Knight Commander Court of Honour Mason in the Newport News Scottish Rite bodies, and held honorary membership in Smithfield Union Lodge #18, Smithfield, Va., Virginia Lodge #177, Claremont, Va. and Ivor Lodge #291, Ivor, Va. Mr. Edwards served as District Deputy Grand Master of Masonic District #32 in 1982. He was appointed to the following positions: 1980 Grand Lodge A.F.&A.M. Committee on Work, 1985 Grand Pursuivant of the Grand Lodge of Virginia and in 1997, Grand Lecturer of the Grand Lodge of Virginia. He was formerly a Shriner of the Khedive Temple, Norfolk and was a former member of Mt. Nebo Royal Arch Chapter #20 and Portsmouth Commandery #5. He was appointed Grand Representative to the Grand Lodge of Delaware in 2001. Mac is survived by a daughter, Audra Louise Gray and her husband, Daniel of Franklin; a son, Joseph McGuire Edwards of Zuni; and grandchildren, Donald Thomas Blythe III, and Christian Alexander Blythe. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Barbara Ann Brantley Edwards; his uncle, Talmage Edwards; and his aunt, Lois Edwards Hann. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 22, 2019, at Poplar Spring Cemetery, Franklin, with Rev. Dr. Charles Quarles and Rev. Steven Gibson officiating. HITESHEW, Harold "Sonny," 78, of Midlothian, passed away on July 17, 2019. In case you think you are reading my obituary, you are not. You are reading about my Home Going. I am now at home with Jesus and my loved ones who went before me. I leave behind "The Love of My Life," Kathy Hiteshew; my sister, Mary Ann McClure (Norman); sons, Timothy A. and Ronald W. (Donna) Hiteshew; and my daughter, Theresa A. Moore (Tommy). LINK, Roland Louis "RL," 80, of Victoria, Va., joined his family in Heaven on July 18, 2019. He was the son of the late Fred Louis Link and Annie Hill Link; father of the late Barbara Ann Link Allen; and brother of the late Johnnie Link. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Virginia B. "Ginny" Link; his daughter, Virginia "Lisa" Link; sisters, Louise Weaver, Jackie Crawley, Lula Mae Bishop, Rachel Weaver, Ruby Martin and Patsy Scott. "RL" was a master sawmill operator and devoted family man. He loved country music and riding with Grizzly. PITO, Mary Frances, 85, a lifelong resident of Hopewell, Va., died Wednesday, July 17, 2019. She was the daughter of the late Louis and Clara Jozwiak Pito. A 1952 graduate of Hopewell High School, Mary retired after many years as Clerk to the Hopewell City Council. She was a member of First Christian Church, member and Past President of the VFW Auxiliary and a past member of the Virginia Municipal Clerks Association. Her hobbies included sewing, gardening and traveling. Mary is survived by numerous cousins. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, July 22, 2019, at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, followed by interment in Appomattox Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the funeral service. SHOCKEY, Mildred Pauline, 93, of Chester, passed away on Thursday, July 18, 2019. She was the daughter of the late Bruce Hamilton and Gypsey Smith Hamilton. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harold F. Shockey. Mrs. Shockey was a talented artist and was very passionate about her craft. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved her family very much. She is survived by her daughter, Joan Shockey Baldwin (Clyde) of Chester, Va.; son, Michael Shockey (Debbie) of Buffton, Ind.; grandchildren, Dawn Baldwin Sykes of Glen Allen, Va., Dianne Baldwin Halloway (Tony) of Church Road, Va., David Shockey (Heather) of Fort Wayne, Ind. and Kimberly Shockey Abney (Clint) of Montpelier, Ind.; great-grandchildren, TJ Halloway, Allison Halloway, Ashley Halloway, Madison Sykes, Landon Sykes, Caitlin Shockey and Kendall Shockey; sister, Anita Baker of Ashland, Ky.; and numerous nieces and nephews. TOWNES, Dorothy Brown, was born on January 14, 1936, in Chesterfield County, to the late Frazier Brown and Rosa Taylor Brown. She peacefully departed this life on Monday, July 15, 2019, at Johnston-Willis Hospital. She attended Chesterfield County Public Schools and was a proud member of the Carver High, Class of 1954. Upon graduation from high school, she attended Smith-Madden Business College. She was employed by Sears for over 10 years. On February 2, 1957, she was united in marriage to John S. Townes Sr., and from this union they had three children, John Jr., Sherondra and Eric. She joined Mt. Nebo Baptist Church at an early age, where she served on the Missionary Board and Kitchen Committee until her health began to fail. She was also a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star Elizabeth Harris Chapter #86 P.H.A. She served as member of the Community Advisory Board of Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Facility for over 30 years. Dorothy, affectionately known as "Dot," is survived by her husband of 62 years, John S. Townes Sr.; three children, John Townes Jr. (Kathy), Sherondra Pryor and Eric Townes; five grandchildren, Tasha Townes, Preston Townes, James Pryor Jr., Marie Dorsey and Selena Townes; three great-grandchildren, John Ball IV, Aiden Clark and Arianna Townes; one aunt, Betty Caleb; four sisters-in-laws, two brothers-in-law; a host of cousins, amongst them, devoted Felicia Daniels; and a host of friends, amongst them, faithful Mary C. Thomas.
